I still have optimism there. For decades Germans have demonstrated a far greater awareness of history than most other nations, in my perception at least. That doesn't just vanish.

I can understand this outside view but it’s unfortunately far from the truth. In the upcoming regional elections in autumn we'll probably see the first eastern states falling. On paper we have a progressive national government but they ain’t doing shit to really combat the Nazis.

And don’t get me started on organized Nazis right within the security forces, etc. etc.

Remember this. The political media reacted in shock, said Macron was a dipshit, and gave ominous predictions of the far right picking up power. And other than Macron might still be a dipshit, they were wrong.

They were wrong because non-right parties agreed to a historical gamble to block the right, rather than putting themselves first.

They were just wrong. All contingencies were on the table when they pounced.

Yes, one has to wonder. Also, the far right media (CNEWS, Europe 1 and JDD) were suggesting that in the event the RN failed to secure a parliamentary majority, election results should be challenged. Sound familiar?

France has a very different voting system and an actual choice of alternatives. The US has two right wing parties led by senile octogenarians. If France had the US system, the fascists would have crushed it. In fact that's one of the things they kept repeating in their whiny postmortem speeches.
