Here's the full page, all this confusion really does live on just a single page that was apparently missed by the publisher. This is on an imprint of Simon & Schuster; we deserve better, as readers.

First example, just to establish a narrative fact: a character named Elke is present. We know this because other characters can look at her.

The characters then leave to go to a second location where they seem to be surprised that Elke is absent. But she went with them, right?

Well, she must have, because guess who gets the next line of dialog.

Except then they go to another location, as a group, and discover that Elke was there, unconscious, all along.

This academic pitching a fit that her book on "hanging out" wasn't cited in an article about hanging out reminds me of the time I gave a paper at a conference and a prominent scholar asked me why I didn't cite their work. My reply of "I didn't find it relevant" sent a chill through the room.
