Sen. Bernie Sanders on #SOTU: United States should begin a "serious discussion" about a shorter, four-day work week. "People are overwhelmed. If new technology is going to make us a more productive society, the benefits should go to the workers."

That dude has been so reasonable for so many decades and nobody's enacted his best policies I hope that before he passes at least one of the big ones he's been promoting gets through But then that would require the GOP to not be sociopathic greedy narcissists who hate good things

Yep - it drives me nuts hearing about old people and how dedicated they were when they entered the workforce. Back then, they probably managed the mental equivalent of a 6th grader. Today's average worker is probably something like 4-5X the productivity of a 1960s era worker.

Here's a more realistic "serious discussion" to have: States and municipalities need to decouple the tax incentives from requirements that demand businesses maintain a percentage of their employees on-site. Misguided return-to-work policies end if incentives include in-state remote jobs.

Watched the entire conversation on the other platform. Beyond being inspired by his ideas for needed change it was nice just to hear actual ideas vs culture war inflaming or nonsensical pivots to fact-less talking points. And as such, you were able to have an actual conversation with your guest. 👍🏻

Generally moving to a four-day workweek might be a neat way to offset future AI job displacement. Definitely preferable to high unemployment. Unbaked idea: Could we deter mass layoffs by making corporate tax rates a function of per-employee profit?

While not unimportant, and worthy of deep-diving, this is dwarfed (constantly) by the *requirement* of definitively, and permanently, resolving campaign finance & all issues relating to undoing ludicrous wealth/income inequality. A 4-day work week is a drop in a gargantuan bucket, at best.

Yes, now we can turn the dishwasher on, the coffee pot, the microwave, Tv while we are texting, FaceTiming, answering emails, printing, reprinting after correcting mistakes we didn’t notice. All that paper we waste that we were suppose to save. This is all done in a matter of minutes.

The longest thing it takes us to do. Get through to a person if possible after getting through all the phone prompts or at check out lines. And try shopping at Walmart with all the online orders being filled. We need an extra day off to take care all the technology requirements of living.

The united states should ALREADY have a $23/hr minimum wage, a public pension, universal healthcare, paid family leave, guaronteed sick and vacation time, and a 30 hr work week. You know, like every other fucking developed country.
