0 sharks ever have been killed to supply $5 bags of shark teeth at beachside stores. Sharks lose teeth constantly their whole lives. You can find them on beaches.
I've seen bags of shark teeth for sale and was intrigued. They said they collect them, as sharks constantly lose them. Is that true? Is the shark tooth trade harming them? (Wondering whether to buy them for a craft project, as I'd like to avoid plastic)

Does the constant loss of teeth play into their overall diets? Do sharks get injuries by accidentally swallowing teeth? Or I guess, simpler: What advantage did they gain by evolving to replace teeth constantly, and are there negatives to it?

Neatly, they grow new (sharp!) teeth in the innermost row and the teeth move outwards and old (blunter) teeth are shed from the outermost row, so a shark is a kind of constant slow motion tooth dispenser, a mental image I just had to share :)

Whatever is being discussed in biology, there's almost always one species that has to complicate things by being a weirdo...in the case of tooth loss, the "hold my beer" approach would be shedding a whole row of teeth as one piece and then eating them. 😳
