bsky's still bad at helping new users construct a relevant and active timeline so it's very easy to get erotica posts you're not looking for and a look at discover seems to indicate that bsky's signature gay male thirst trappers and furry perverts are now also being joined en masse by anime perverts
I have adult content filtering turned on and I’ve literally only ever seen one NSFW image since I joined bsky so I’m always a bit confused by people who say it’s very easy to accidentally stumble upon when they’re not looking for it
Exactly that, I set up those settings and I never came across an 18+ image again. Or, since it has been quite a while since I got invited in, they maybe were the default
When it's the first thing people see (like it was for me) and those people minors, yes it's a very bad thing. At least for the people posting smut and everybody that wants this place to continue to exist.
the very first thing that happened to me was that it wrongly hid my jpg post as adult content and hid it from myself, I had to enable it in settings so that's probably fixed now
I always thought about how things will become once they start coming in. I mean, imo they were usually the demographic who’d always be the ones “dunking” and engaging instead of blocking for clout. i’m just gonna block them and move on but idkk
Some states mandate it for access to potential adult content. Obviously impossible to 100% curate given the user generated nature of SM in the moment, but if you get an angy parent frothing and it turns out their lack of supervision let the kid inappropriately age themselves, it's not bsky's fault.
On the flip side, the info can also connect users with similarly aged accounts and just filter out those that are nsfw or broach certain "not for kids" topics with the algorithm. Again, not perfect, but a use.
Inevitably, I look to the recent twitch hubbub and people handwringing about child access when ToS was always 18+ w/o supervision. Adults really shouldn't have to give up spaces just because kids try to sneak in or their parents think the internet is a babysitter.

But yes, good point. Things are finely balanced, and a swarm of teens is going to skew things. And holy shit I sound like an old man.
