I think it’s reasonable for private universities to impose some restrictions on the content of the speech. Universities have student codes of conduct. Enforcing them is fair.
But I totally agree that you don’t need the cops cracking down. Illinois just handled a student protest fairly well.
The admin at Northwestern, after a false start, is leaning in to those principles. As long as there’s no damage, disruptions to academics, or violence, the protestors can stay there while they negotiate. Campus police and security are there to ensure those things and nothing else.
