Guess how this go-getter was able to build her own tinyhome at 20? Oh her construction job gave her free shit, she houses it on her parents land and doesn't pay rent. Well shit if i didn't have to pay for construction, land or property, I could build a home too. www.stuff.co.nz/home-propert...

Also the guy down the road built it for free, and her mom is going to paint it for free But she's so determined Kieran

like as someone without a lot of DIY experience, and who hates painting, i'd certainly not hand the *easy* shit, like painting, off to other people.

i did kind of chuckle at the "Yeah I get treated differently on worksites, because i'm a woman.... And i get everybody else to build my house for me"
Avatar
pulling myself up by my bootstraps, oh no i dont even have boots
Avatar
Do you have a father and boyfriend who will help you with the parts that you do actually try to do yourself 😆
Avatar
alas i have neither, i shall never succeed

This could have been a decent story about how to build an ADU on your property, but they had tell in in the most annoying way possible!
Avatar
Not stuff. Every week they run another "This young person is already on the property ladder, and all they had to go was be given a house!" article.
Avatar
Well, this story couldn't have been that story 😄 but they probably could find one that would
Avatar
They appear to have gotten better at obscuring the facts in these stories. They used to plainly state who actually paid for it by about paragraph six
Avatar
They will never get good enough to stop me noticing that every single time they run this article the "go-getter" is getting a free ride every time.

Follow the hidden perks, sources, entitlements, inheritances.

You forgot "skirting planning regs".
Avatar
No shit, I sure did. I own a tiny plot where I'm at but I sure can't, on a whim, build some additional edifice without leaping giant permit hurdles and, if that works out, paying some hefty fees.
Avatar
The real follow-up will be in a year or so when it’s still on the parents land because local planning laws means that it can’t be put on just any leased piece of land.
Avatar
"Also the NZMCA won't let me use any of their campgrounds. no, i didn't join, i had to do that?"
Avatar
Given that most tiny houses don’t actually meet the self contained criteria, that’s probably not a route that’s available.
Avatar
sure but regulations are obstacles for little people.
Avatar
Luckily once you are in a tiny home you are one of the little people. Nimbys gonna Nimby. And never underestimate the weaponised pettiness of the elder nzmca members.
Avatar
yeah mum already deals with them. there will be no vote from me to keep the caravan when my brothers and i have to go through assets one day.
Avatar
These fucking stories are trotted out like clockwork.
Avatar
Worse is that usually in the sidebar there's a story about how housing has reached unaffordable new highs.
Avatar
Marry one of my kids. I’ve got the land.
Avatar
if you insist, but you're not getting grandkids from me.

now i see you write fantasy and i feel it's in my best interests to check first. you're not trying to set me up with fae are you?
Avatar
Isn’t that just when your parents build you a treehouse?
Avatar
I guess I have some words for my parents then, since they sold the property my treehouse was built on and I never saw a cent.
Avatar
You may be entitled to compensation 🧐

Literslly every other line in this is 'with help from' 'at a discount from' 'will help her with' 'mates rates' 'free from work'
Avatar
it's fucking infuriating because every other day they'll run a story or two about the housing crisis, and bookend it with "look at this inspiring go-getter, they bought their third house at 17 and their parents only did 3 genocides to afford it!"
