There's a whole stretch of WORLD'S FINEST covers, mostly by Win Mortimer, showing Superman, Batman and Robin together, even though they're not in the same stories inside. It seems like it'd be fun to tell the unseen stories behind each cover...

Though you'd need to figure out why the boys spend so much time chilling out with pretty young women...

...and staging contests they let Robin win. This is not to say these stories shouldn't be told, mind you.

Sometimes they just hang out, amusing themselves...
Avatar
...and sometimes it seems like a story that really needs to be told.

But all in all, they're just charming covers. They need stories.

I think maybe the "Superman, Batman and Robin hang out with pretty girls" stories should be by @paultobin.bsky.social and @colleencoover.bsky.social.

The #31 cover can go so many ways. Are they unlicensed (perhaps dangerous?) figures? Are they official merch? Are the heroes happy or upset? I think there was a Superman Animated episode where Toyman sold Superman action figures programmed to steal... so many options.

This one would be one heck of a mystery story! (similar concept, alternate genre) bsky.app/profile/pype...
Stolen from FB, but boy howdy does this image tell a story and leave me longing for more!

So now we know why the crime rate is soaring in Metropolis and Gotham City.

I *always* want to read the adventures Win Mortimer assumed they were having

It's like smugness is their superpower.

I definitely want to read the “Batman beats up a random carnie for $100” story.

Spoiler alert for the fourth cover: They're dressed up as each other. Superman is dressed as Robin. Robin is dressed as Batman, and Batman is dressed as Superman. (Superman is contracting his muscles so tight that he shrinks)
Avatar
I want to know why Bruce Wayne needs to compete for $100.

One-Round Riley used to beat him up in second grade.

Rich people don't get/stay rich by passing up free money.

I’d like that last one more if they were in each other’s costumes.

#1 "J Jonah Jameson will pay top dollar for these!" "Wrong universe, Robin."

Clark looks like he’s really giving the business to that shoeshine guy.

Batman looks so deliriously happy whenever he's around Superman

#1 Superman was far more enthused about catching some of those fish before he realized he couldn't see through them.

It's just nice to see Batman smile. He used to smile. All these years fighting the Joker, he can't even smile anymore.

What is there to figure out?
Avatar
I’m not sure that it’s much of a mystery why they’re hanging out with pretty young women.
Avatar
Why do Batman and Robin keep kidnapping blond women?
Avatar
I'm just going to pretend/assume that's the same danger-prone blonde in there twice.
Avatar
I think that would be the way to go, yes.
Avatar
"How long have we been carrying her, anyway, old chum?"

First issue: Superman rips a train apart to distract everyone from Batman and Robin kidnapping a woman. Second issue: The Trinamic Trio save Hitler from a flood. Still working on the others…

#3: "Supes, I told you not to insult Thor. Sure you can tank a lightning blast, but now these nice dresses are ruined!"

I would pay good money to read that!

I also see that Green Arrow gets lesser billing than... the Wyoming Kid

Disaster averted, lives saved, and yet no evil-doer in sight. I wish we got more stories like these to remind us heroism isn’t punching.

I'd buy it. I've also always wanted to do a Superman set in a universe where Action Comics covers were unironically the story. (& consider, the covers were what most saw) It seems the universe implied by SA DC covers is so much more insane and the superheroes so much weirder or even menacing

...of course, Chris Ware actually kind of HAS done that Superman, the terrifying father god Super-Man
