I suspect that I am the only one who knows this, so for anyone interested, here is the answer. One of Tippett’s greatest friends in his early life, and a major influence on his politics, was his cousin, Phyllis Kemp. A Communist herself, she persuaded him to join the Communist Party in the 1930s.
Looking forward to a programme about Michael Tippett on the TV tonight. I am reminded that he has an interesting, if indirect, connection to @UCLSSEES. So here is a quiz question for SSEES people here. Does anyone know the connection between Michael Tippett and SSEES?

Dear @Channel4News, the #Y2K bug was not a phantom. I shouted at the TV when your reporter said that. A lot of people worked very hard for years to fix systems in advance precisely to avoid catastrophe. Nobody ever notices or appreciates systems work that succeeds. #c4news

Public librarian here. Please do what you can to help keep these fuckers away from power. 📚
Psst: Project 2025 is terrifying for a lot of reasons but also because on page 5 it calls for teachers and librarians who grant access to books that are maligned as pornography (which just means anything LGBTQ) to be registered as sex offenders. Pass it on.

An excellent and varied collection of articles in the latest edition of Focus, @CILIP_ILIG’s journal. Ever wondered how libraries are portrayed in video games? Here is your answer. Plus combating climate change, managing born digital archives, and more. www.cilip.org.uk/resource/col...

Is the end of the world nigh, by any chance? We have a power cut , expected to last some hours. That would be ok, as it is July. Except the sky is dark and getting darker, and it has just started raining. I can hardly see to read.

For any fellow coeliacs treating themselves to a #glutenfree picnic at @Wimbledon, be careful. Incredibly, it isn’t as safe as it should be.

Oh bless! One of my acquisitions folks told me about a recent conversation w someone in accounting who thought the library could re-sell old ebooks to students the same way we can with print books. I laughed so hard! 📚

Our leisure centre supplier has improved its app unhelpfully yet again, so suddenly I can’t book 2 different sessions for the same time slot. Sounds superficially reasonable, but a quick swim followed by a sauna is not a strange thing to want to do.

Well this is wild! Was looking up the Reform candidate for my constituency and found a website run by another Reform candidate where he’s listed. There’s also a helpful constituency map. Look at the place names towards the bottom. What do you see?

On way home from the always fascinating COSEELIS conference. This time the focus was on marginalised communities and how we treat them in collections and metadata.

I love how when we first got the internet, Wikipedia was an "unreliable source" and now it's one of the last remaining websites that's actually fact checked

ok i have another quote tweet prompt. what's something, big or small, related to your job or hobby, that most people don't know that you would like to have them know? it can be a concept, a piece of history, some vocabulary, or something else.

For complicated reasons, I spent half an hour on a hot bus sitting between, and crushed between, two large men. They seemed nice enough, but they held a lengthy conversation across me. Why do people do that? I would never do that. Is it me?

Sorry to say, archive.org is under a ddos attack. The data is not affected, but most services are unavailable. We are working on it & will post updates in comments.

It is incredibly tempting to tear the absurd national service scheme to shreds, but surely it is a dead cat. We need to stay focused on the NHS, the economy, education, security, etc.

One of the toughest problems Microsoft has to solve is that Windows has to serve two very different types of users: business users who don't want this at all, and home users who don't want this at all.

Currently arguing with the admin of an FB health group because she is using the infected blood scandal to go full anti vax, the NHS and big pharma. This was inevitable and is very depressing.

as someone who spent half a life in bars & restaurants i am here to tell you that you, in fact, *cannot* tell a lot about a person by these categories. eggs: steak: milk: alcohol: warm drink: though it’s certainly fun to share!
