I suspect that I am the only one who knows this, so for anyone interested, here is the answer. One of Tippett’s greatest friends in his early life, and a major influence on his politics, was his cousin, Phyllis Kemp. A Communist herself, she persuaded him to join the Communist Party in the 1930s.

Looking forward to a programme about Michael Tippett on the TV tonight. I am reminded that he has an interesting, if indirect, connection to @UCLSSEES. So here is a quiz question for SSEES people here. Does anyone know the connection between Michael Tippett and SSEES?

Every academic article has a corresponding author whose email address is listed on the first page. If an article is paywalled, just send a short, polite email requesting a PDF from the author. 95% of the time you’ll receive it within a day. People like knowing their work is being read!

Sorry to say, archive.org is under a ddos attack. The data is not affected, but most services are unavailable. We are working on it & will post updates in comments.

It is incredibly tempting to tear the absurd national service scheme to shreds, but surely it is a dead cat. We need to stay focused on the NHS, the economy, education, security, etc.

There ought to be a name for the time that passes between entering your details on a website and deciding that the code isn’t going to appear in your email account, no matter how often you refresh it.

One of the toughest problems Microsoft has to solve is that Windows has to serve two very different types of users: business users who don't want this at all, and home users who don't want this at all.
