Hi! I'm Leah. I study sanctions, war and dictators professionally and Fungi personally. I'm a terrible millennial, prefer typewriters to computers, and am an insufferable optimist. I'm glad you're here.
Lineworkers are truly amazing. After Ida, I made sure to get the names of the guys from Oklahoma that finally got my power back on, and I sent them thank you gifts.
I pulled extremely far back from social media. I don't have twitter or Facebook, and I mostly stick to fungi, nature, positivity and love when I look at spaces like this one. I guess that's why it was so jarring to sit and listen to someone talk about twitter drama this evening.
I'm so strange with coffee. I either like black, plain coffee, or a drink like this...the rosemary ficus. An oatmilk latte with fresh in house made fig preserves and served with a fresh sprig of rosemary for stirring.

The labradoodle up the street decided to potty up against the chain link fence separating her yard and her neighbor's (it's a duplex so it's one big yard that's partitioned), and it was truly one of the strangest things I've ever seen. I wonder if she's mad at them for some reason. Dogs, man.
The 4th of July is (understandably) a complicated observance. Another really solid exercise on this day is to take stock of your own independence. Maybe celebrate yourself today and all of those things from which you are now free. Progress and growth are worth fireworks. πππ«Άπ»β€οΈ
I went to dinner with my in-laws tonight (who are lovely and remind me of Morty and Helen Seinfeld). They pulled up listening to Coolio. I could not contain my π―.
One of the reasons I left twitter, and never really felt kindredness with much of "NOLA twitter" in general is because of this. I'm super into hope, joy, kindness and optimism. Cynicism, nihilism and smugness reigned supreme over there. Me? I'm cringe, the girl (and I'm super ok with it).
One of the worst things about online in the last few years has been the idea of "cringe" and how its been used to crush the ideas of believing in things, wholeheartedness, hope.
I have done this for years with a couple of organizations. It's awesome, and does make a difference. I also LOVE mail generally, and regularly write letters and postcards anyway, so it's just become part of the routine.
I stumbled upon these two little fun guys, and almost felt like I was interrupting something. A #MushroomMonday strategy meeting, perhaps?

I am currently redoing my bedroom in a bug and garden theme. My husband built me these adorable little guys, placed them on a shelf at the entrance, and made them surround the antique mushroom lamp he bought me.

I simply don't know how not to romanticize my morning walks when I get to live in a place like this.
Happy and blessed Saturday, everyone.

Oh, and yeah, I work politics adjacent. I've been a foreign policy analyst and human rights activist for over a decade. No, I don't need to watch a debate of any sort, or the skewed, only for clicks, deeply cynical, horse race media coverage. π
One of the things I've done in my life recently (last few months) is change my relationship to social media and online life drastically. Doing that really has shown what an entirely different world the extremely online inhabit, and how incredibly mean spirited so many can be.
