When the Latino ran out without paying, she said, the Asian counterman yelled after him, “Schmuck!”
Native New Yorker here and it did not dawn on me until reading this post this moment that it could be felt as appropriative. We are handed bagels and buns with a shmear in our baby carriages. Huh. Well, now I will think about it when out of NYC.
