I feel a full body cringe any time a non-Jewish person says “schmear,” I don’t know why, I just do

It’s a very particular Yiddish word to feel possessive of

The absolute revulsion I felt one time when my ex asked me to get him a bagel with “half a schmear” actually helped me get my OCD dx tho

I feel that way about 'tuches'. I have no idea why. It's weird.

Did anyone else’s mother say ‘tushy’ instead of ‘tuches’ or was it just mine?

I definitely heard tushy as a kid.

My mother said tushy but her mother said tuchus. My dad said tushy to us kids but tuchus when talking about an adult.

A friend of mine claimed to have once heard a Latino order “bagel con schmear” at a deli. When the Latino ran out without paying, she said, the Asian counterman yelled after him, “Schmuck!”

In NYC? Everyone here seems to have a handful of Yiddish.

I love it. The more Yiddish in English, the better.

I'm ok with it if and only if the non-Jewish person in question is a New Yorker.

Native New Yorker here and it did not dawn on me until reading this post this moment that it could be felt as appropriative. We are handed bagels and buns with a shmear in our baby carriages. Huh. Well, now I will think about it when out of NYC.

it's a card game in Wisconsin, but I think everyone knows (or used to know) it means "butter". because you're trying to butter up your partner's hand oh God I really am from Mars
