Amazon's One Care triages all patient phone calls through a call center staffed with people with no medical training or experience, and who have two weeks' training total. Patients have died. Gift link: wapo.st/4cq019f
Leaked documents reveal patient safety issues at Amazon’s One Medicalwapo.st After One Medical began using a call center staffed by contractors with minimal training, patients with urgent symptoms failed to receive immediate help.

My brain is just reverberating “what the fuck” back and forth.

They used to be excellent. Arrrrgh.

(Like srsly the Bay Area One Medical offices have lots of queer/trans employees everywhere and some excellent HRT providers.)
Avatar
They were a key queer provider in DC, for similar reasons, in part. I am so upset about this.
Avatar
They were very good in NYC too. This is just sad.
Avatar
Terrifying and horrific but also exactly the quality expected from Amazon.

What? Not even EMT's? That's not just irresponsible, you're going to lose any money you save on labor because you're going to be sued into oblivion.
Avatar
I certainly hope so, but lawsuits against Amazon are going to be very very expensive and drag on for years. And nope. Not EMTs. Random people who work in a call center.
Avatar
If that method worked, nobody would do it. They do it all the time.

Gift link demands an email now. Fun.

Not only that, but as a FORMER subscriber, it won't let me read the gift link. I guess I would have to use an email WaPo doesn't know about.
Avatar
Try making up a fake name and using [email protected] ? Sometimes they don't know about that trick.
Avatar
It seems to be testing against whether it's a real email address or not. I tried a couple of obviously not real ones

Avatar
I put in a super obviously fake email address, but not Gmail 🤷‍♂️

In retrospect, trusting the company that tells its employees to pee in bottles and encourages them to throw packages at each other with our medical health was shortsighted.
Avatar
It wasn’t always owned by Amazon it was purchased. And for a while it was the only doctors still masking round here. But now they don’t either.
Avatar
As someone who's worked in customer service with amazon, this tracks pretty hard. Youd get a call from someone in an int. call center transfer someone mad already to verify stuff they already told the rep. Whole system was dumb af.
Avatar
Imma follow this up with this: since i knew amazon people were still there on mute, id close up interactions with "Magical Amazon Sky Genie, are you still there?!?"
Somehow this is both exactly what I expected and worse. May everyone responsible for this abomination face the most severe punishment allowable.
Avatar
Appreciate the editorial independence at Wapo to report on scandal at the owners other company. Will such independence continue
Avatar
Well, the new publisher has already fired an editor because she wanted to run a story on his being included in the hacking trials in England. It isn't looking good.
Avatar
What the fuck is the company that makes their delivery drivers piss in empty mountain dew bottles doing owning a medical company???
Avatar
Two weeks classroom training is what my call center staff had back in 1997 to troubleshoot Windows and printers. Not to triage calls from medical patients. I also found the article for free on MSN: www.msn.com/en-us/health...

Dear Amazon executives: The "K" in KPI does not stand for "Kills"
Avatar
BlueCross NC now uses Amazon as their mail order pharmacy. Every prescription comes in the SAME LOOKING BOTTLE and they are trying to get me to refill meds I've archived cause I haven't taken them for a YEAR. They're gonna kill somebody
Avatar
That sounds awful. I hate dealing with mail order pharmacies. Re: same bottles - one tip I stole from my dad is to take a sharpie and write 2 or 3 letters of the Rx name on the caps. Way easier to read.

Avatar
I do that, too! And how many I have to take per day. Thanks for the tip

...and you have to reckon with a little churn, that's just the cost of doing business.

Disney calls them guests, Biden calls them voters, Donnie calls them marks. You can learn a lot about someone from what they call you.

I remember when I loved Amazon. And Google. They made my life better.
Avatar
Ditto, including the past tense.

I knew the minute this was introduced it was going to be a nightmare. Besos got his hands in too many pots and one is bound to bankrupt him.

Commodifying health care doesn't work? What a shocker. NOT. 😂
Avatar
Ah ok so my assumption--that Amazon Care is bullshit--was correct

Death of expertise -> actual death

My regular healthcare takes months for an appointment, I presume patients have died from that, as well. One takes your membership money and gives it to Jeff Bezos to help you jump the queue in get in a month earlier or somesuch.
Avatar
There is no evidence that the subsection (formerly Iona) lets people jump the queue. It serves elderly people on Medicare Advantage. It is not a concierge service. I hope that, when you call your regular healthcare, they send you to the ER if there's a threat to life.
Avatar
If it's "urgent" I go to the ER. Last time I was stuck on a gurney for 2 days before being admitted.
Avatar
The point of having health hotlines is for people to understand when it is urgent, because stroke and heart attack symptoms are not always obvious to a person with no medical training.
