Just a short hike for bugs & wildflowers. Because of the terrain, I’ve always suspected it’s rattlesnake habitat.
I was admiring a large spider web & hole just to the left of this guy. Then I saw him. But the phunny thing, I decided to give up on my hike because of the morning’s first rattlesnake.
When I first started dating my husband, a native Bostonian, I took him on a hike in the hills in LA. I warned him about rattlesnakes. "Rattlesnakes?! We're in a city!" he said in disbelief. 5 minutes later, the biggest rattlesnake I have ever seen slithered right across the trail in front of us.
He's looking the other way. I'm sure you're totally fine and could even pet him and he wouldn't notice. Not like they have lightning reflexes or anything

This is in an area that I would suspect rattlesnakes, and have always avoided hiking there during the summer. But it’s been very hot this week so they are out. I saw two today but I don’t see rattlesnakes often. I do see gopher snakes all the time.
Do you have venomous snakes where you live?
Ah, OK. 🙏👍 I was wondering, the best thing of our corner of the world is, there are no really poisonous animals around.
One snake, but the poison is not deadly unless there is an allergic reaction.
The one I came across on Friday was so fat and placid. Completely ignored me, even when I stomped the ground a bit. She also had some weird coloration. Very washed out on the front half, bolder pattern on the back.
That is interesting patterns. I sorta made noise at the first rattlesnake (because I really wanted to get to the flowers) but she was not interested in moving along.
I’m in Vermont. None of my friends need to be from afar 🐍 Well, until I bucket list to go and see one of the handful of endangered timbers we’ve got. Then it will also be from afar. And with awe.
Someone else in my Safari group was interested in insects, so we started pointing out new ones to each other!
One that I thought was pretty cool was a praying mantis that was hanging out in our tent one of the first nights. Little buddy kept us safe. :D
