It’s honestly two fold:
One, Carolina has its own specific burger style involving chili and onions so for those in the know this is misleading
Two, and most importantly, Carolina bbq is exclusive pork NOT beef and there should be nothing sweet about the sauce at all.
This is a monstrosity!
It would be like a California based chain selling a “Philly cheesesteak style” burger that was a turkey patty with avocado and grilled onions and pepper
A vinegar sauce? Is the skyline ready for such a hyper-specific Discourse?
I claim western NC roots, my BBQ sauce boasts a tomato base and I’ll hear no slander against it
1) no, we are NOT prepared for that discourse
2) I knew nothing about BBQ until my very first Fall Fest when some local Chapel Hill place was handing out free sandwiches on South Rd. I took a bite and it was the best thing I'd ever tasted so I gotta go team vinegar on this one sorry
My best friend in my 20s and 30s was from South Carolina (she died of a rare kidney disease) and she gave me a banger vinegar type BBQ recipe that I’ve used for years. I also like Kansas City style bbq, too.
Raised in the eastern Carolina (dad is from low country SC and we hate Maurice's mustard BS) tradition, I still love Lexington style as a close second.

Mustard is the best. Then pepper and vinegar and vinegar are tied. Then tomato is last. I come from tomato people, it’s not the best.

Real BBQ is whole hog cooked in mop sauce. Anything else is a bastardization.
