Horrible news about the fascists. Only hope that the cult of personality nature of their party will cause them to be fighting themselves the whole term, but that doesn't change how many people voted for them.

What a win for Labour. Holy cow. Congratulations.

Eh. Very glad the Tories are gone, the current Labour leadership are very bad on things they should be good on. We'll see how much was to get votes (and even then, eg throwing trans people under the bus for that is disgusting). To Be Determined, basically.

Speaking from across the pond, Labour's move toward the "center" (for want of a better term) reminds me of 90s Clinton-era Democrats making similar moves. Led to short-term gains, but at the expense of what should be core party values/ideals

And fwiw I’m not a fan of the Political Compass graphs for placing parties because the axes aren’t clearly defined for a simple read. The line between Left and Right is essentially Capitalism/Communism so almost all Western parties come out as Right which can be misleading
Avatar
And they don’t account for nuances in local attitudes and values. It slaps a standardized value system on every culture. A good tool for study, but not for understanding local or national politics

A lot of folks have that criticism of the method. I find it unpersuasive living, as I do, part of the time in a european country that has communist members of parliament

Look, it’s right there in the center of the blue area.

I’m not up on the minutiae of this election-very distracted by our own- but I think your summary of the situation sounds like every party slightly left of center in history. Handed the keys to success and lose them in the sofa cushions.

The aggressive bigotry of Starmer’s labour is different than just the usual centrist rightward drift. They’re almost identical to the David Cameron tories. It’s more about people just electing a more *stable* conservatism.

The Tories have been emboldening the far right in this country for over a decade - now they're clearly toast, none of those votes were going to go Lib Dem or Labour. It really is horrible and I can't bear the thought of Farage as an actual MP.
Avatar
Oh yeah, it's (far) right of the party Tory voters who are just mad about incompetence or whatever, rather than the immorality. Still. That's a lot of MPs.

Trying to enjoy the victory but right swing of Labour Party/Starmer policies + suggestion any of those pound shop Nazis getting in makes me feel very queasy

Given an exit poll of thirteen has turned into a fact of four, with at least that many nutters from within the Tories going, I think it’s not the end of the world. Farage is great at publicity, but has never bothered to put the work in of doing anything.
Avatar
Look at how Galloway, on the other extreme, is great at persuading people to elect him as a protest about (insert foreign conflict of the season) then gets punted next time because he never delivers anything. If you’re on the far right, but want to protest Tory incompetence, Nigel’s always there.
Avatar
Note this tweet was after the exit poll but: yes it's not as bad as it could be, yes Farage won't do any actual work, but it's still something to be very concerned about given the vote numbers. But no, not as bad as it first seemed.

Damn. Not great, but still fewer than the nutter count the Tories are down, to be fair.

Bummer that we switched Rees-Mogg, Gallagher, Truss, Baker and Jenkyns for Fromage, Tice, Anderson, Lowe and McMurdock.... 😐

Not Gallagher - Galloway. Wasn't trying to imply one of the Oasis brothers got kicked out of parliament

I'd love to see that though

If they’re all of the quality of Lee Anderson they’ll probably all get locked in the HoP toilets if they even bother turning up.

They'll all be pissed off with Farage wanting all the attention, for sure.
