Horrible news about the fascists. Only hope that the cult of personality nature of their party will cause them to be fighting themselves the whole term, but that doesn't change how many people voted for them.

What a win for Labour. Holy cow. Congratulations.

Eh. Very glad the Tories are gone, the current Labour leadership are very bad on things they should be good on. We'll see how much was to get votes (and even then, eg throwing trans people under the bus for that is disgusting). To Be Determined, basically.

I’m not up on the minutiae of this election-very distracted by our own- but I think your summary of the situation sounds like every party slightly left of center in history. Handed the keys to success and lose them in the sofa cushions.

The aggressive bigotry of Starmer’s labour is different than just the usual centrist rightward drift. They’re almost identical to the David Cameron tories. It’s more about people just electing a more *stable* conservatism.

Speaking from across the pond, Labour's move toward the "center" (for want of a better term) reminds me of 90s Clinton-era Democrats making similar moves. Led to short-term gains, but at the expense of what should be core party values/ideals

Look, it’s right there in the center of the blue area.

And fwiw I’m not a fan of the Political Compass graphs for placing parties because the axes aren’t clearly defined for a simple read. The line between Left and Right is essentially Capitalism/Communism so almost all Western parties come out as Right which can be misleading

And they don’t account for nuances in local attitudes and values. It slaps a standardized value system on every culture. A good tool for study, but not for understanding local or national politics

National Abstractions are abstractions is also not massively persuasive as a critique.

A lot of folks have that criticism of the method. I find it unpersuasive living, as I do, part of the time in a european country that has communist members of parliament

Conversely I find it an invaluable tool in understanding and talking about local (i.e. European nation level) political positions. Any framing that places UK Labour on an absolute left axis would be worthless, and a relative left axis is trivially true.
