i worked in an elite college admissions office (not making acceptance decisions) and can tell young white men with good grades that it’s not underprivileged minorities taking their spots but lacrosse players who totaled their jeep one time
Avatar
it's not fair. i had to total so many jeeps

Justice for regular bug deal when

that's the problem, you only get the one, maybe 2-3 if your family name is engraved somewhere on campus

And totally the kids of people who are alumni.

they don't always check, i think if the school is wealthy enough they assume all the alums have money. i snuck in as the legacy of a broke person.

True. In my head there’s a distinction between “legacy student” and “this kid’s dumber than a box of rocks but his daddy bought us a new building” when it comes to admissions.
Avatar
It's a difference of degree, but not type.

And a difference of effort exerted to make sure the kid gets in to court that massive donation.

At most big schools, legacy only comes into play if you’ve given enough to have your name engraved somewhere on campus.

Former boss went to Princeton as had his father, both doctors. Had 4 kids only 1 wanted to go there, was denied and Rice fell all over themselves recruiting him to their engineering department. Kid is wicked hella smart.

I think sometimes for less rich people, it’s used as a deciding factor between two very similar applicants.

With private schools, esp private liberal arts, just being legacy is enough.

Have you ever read a really touching, heartfelt application essay describing the trauma and heartbreak of rolling your Jeep in front of Trevor's parents' house?

I realized after I wrote this that my roommate for a few years at a prestigious public U had gotten drunk and crashed his car into a neighbor's house the night of his HS graduation. You were the best of us, Jason.

Followup that no one asked for: there were no injuries

My application had a little sticker in some weird Office Use Only section. It said “Men’s Swimming.” And I was like…oh.

And white girls, the backbone of every American public university
Avatar
Nah, white girls are more likely to get bumped for white boys bc gender balance (more girls go to college than guys)
Avatar
I suppose with affirmative action now gone they are no longer the greatest beneficiaries of it.
Avatar
Nah, as I understand it, it's still the case that schools can vary their standards to maintain gender balance, so less qualified guys are going to keep getting admitted over more qualified women.

My partner's mom was reminiscing about how in the CUNY system in the 50's, they actually had published rules about the higher test result requirements for women.
Avatar
What about 2 times, would that raise their chances?
Avatar
Same! And yep!!! Truth!

In other words, normal kids.

Very specific criteria that are unsurprising.
