The difference between Wikipedia and Twitter is that Wikipedia is intentionally a non-profit.

How can he be this stupid. I know fuck all about the internal workings of Wikipedia but anyone who's been on the internet should understand the concept of "bandwidth"
Avatar
Oh the whole text is just a few gigabytes? What happens when a billion people access that every month
Avatar
To be fair, he doesn't have any experience running a website a lot of people use

I'll just state that Wikimedia is more than just English Wikipedia, there are many Wikipedias in different languages, Wikidata, and of course, Wikipedia Commons, which is a media repository. But yeah, Elno is being dumb again.
Avatar
You can say Elon here, he can't hurt you.
Avatar
I don’t think he is. He knows better. He’s just stirring up shit because that’s what he does.
Avatar
Most likely that he’s trying to get his base mad about the Wikimedia Foundation to direct attention away from the latest thing he’s intentionally fucking up.
Avatar
Yeah, even he's not that ignorant. Or that foolish. He's attacking the media. Straight out of the tyrant's playbook.
Avatar
He got upset by Jimbo Wales suggesting there was a difference between real and fake journalism hence the tantrum)
Avatar
Yes, and iirc Wales wasn't even talking to Musk, he just butted into that conversation and started tweeting weird shit.
Avatar
Or just generally get it under attack and make it harder for them for being *generally* unbiased and apolitical. He deals in disinformation and conspiracy.
Avatar
I was just today listening to a podcast about The Cult of Elon Musk spotify.link/nBxSjwMu8Db
Avatar
He’s steering his ass-licking cult army to attack his enemies. It’s not stupid of him if he gets what he wants from his flock. Exact same scenario with Trump’s mindless tweets that got his targets threatened.
Avatar
My guess is that it's not that deep, and he's just trying to cast doubts at Wikimedia so fewer people will donate to them and more will purchase xitter premium
Avatar
I took the time to set up a recurring monthly payment to Wikipedia after he posted that bullshit.
Avatar
Sincere or not, either way, he gets to have his goons antagonize Wikimedia, just like he went after ADL and New York Times.
Avatar
MFW i am called to Lay Down My Life for Neo Alexandra as it is ransacked by the lowest heathens in all of god's creation (unfunny shitposters)
Avatar
I think he has a problem understanding other people (and their wishes) are real and not like his wishes, see how he is changing twitter to suit his personal prefs (and all his companies basically being toys). In a different universe he is a bad gamedev arguing with gamers who dont get his games.
Avatar
I have an image reference website and a donation page due to bandwidth costs. I can’t even imagine what Wikipedia pays for bandwidth…
Avatar
I don' t think he is, but his followers are.
Avatar
Musk stans: "He's the smartest tech boy who ever tech'd!!" Musk: *doesn't understand how websites work*
Avatar
It's worse, he doesn't understand how to Google something. The smartest big boy in the world thinks research is when a conspiracy theorist tells him the scoops about how the world "really works".
Avatar
Ever since I heard him talk about redoing Twitter's "entire stack," I saw someone who was faking his way through software. This quote confirms he knows nothing about software or software operations. Money is a failed metaphor for intelligence once again.
Avatar
I mean the extent of my tech expertise is running a B-tier webcomic and even I've had to deal with the fact that traffic costs money. I'm sure Musk knows that much, barely; he just thinks other people are even stupider than he is and he can fool us.
Avatar
I've reached a point where I've stopped giving people who say stupid things some benefit of the doubt. For a long time, I was certain Ted Cruz wasn't as stupid as the things he said . . . just because he went to Princeton & Harvard. Then I realized, no, he is that stupid.
Avatar
My partner and I always argue about this. She thinks people are malicious but can't possibly be this stupid. I insist that they may also be malicious, but they certainly are also just that stupid.
Avatar
I've worked with some very smart people. Most are pretty good folks. But I've seen up close that being smart at one thing doesn't transfer to other things necessarily. Look at James Watson and William Shockley. I've seen that sort of person more than once.
Avatar
I think people like this aren't necessarily as stupid as they seem, but lord, they ain't bright.
Avatar
To quote Christopher Lloyd in "Camp Nowhere": "Just because you're smart doesn't mean you can't act stupid! It's your constitutional right!"
Avatar
I appreciate this Deep Cut. 👍🏽😂
Avatar
Consider this even intelligent people are subject to cognitive biases which leads them to act in objectively stupid ways.
Avatar
Well, "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." as Hanlon's razor says, after all.
Avatar
"Sufficiently advanced stupidity is indistinguishable from malice." --Grey's Law
Avatar
I think the Trump era has taught us that stupidity and malice are entirely capable of existing simultaneously, and generally do among white supremacists.
Avatar
My take exactly. “He was a great debater!” — “he’s a cynical dipshit who says blazingly stupid things for clout”. What is the difference in any possible way? I don’t care what he truly believes. He is a fucking idiot.
Avatar
In many cases, it's not stupid in terms of their ability to analyse their knowledge, it's stupid because they refuse to take on new knowledge from outside their ideological bubble. "This challenges my beliefs, therefore it must be incorrect and I can ignore it".
Avatar
Strongly disagree - Narbonic and Skin-Horse were both A-tier and I reread both regularly.
Avatar
However much traffic they had, they were S-tier in my heart. (And the hearts of my friends too.)
Avatar
"Why don't the people at Wikimedia just dip into their emerald inheritance when they run out of pixels or whatever?"
Avatar
Is that the new “how often do you think of Ancient Rome” bit? Because I don’t think of Wikimedia at all.
Avatar
I think of the library of Alexandria every goddamn day.
Avatar
JUSTICE FOR THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA!!! AND IT'S MODERN INCARNATION TODAY!!!
Avatar
Check out this bench there!
Avatar
Holy shit! i don't even read books, but this is cool! What's it say?
Avatar
Avatar
Some of Shakespeare's sonnets.
Avatar
And every day it thinks of us, far away on the very large and very fun alien spaceship that stole the library from our planet and then gifted it sentience.
