I am lucky. I work at an institution that gives me access to NYT’s complete archive, which is often useful in my real work. Cancelled my sub some time ago.
There's actually a movement among crossword creators to stop submitting puzzles to the NYT. It's not the majority of them or anything, but it's real.
Plus, you can play Wordle without a subscription.
