Some initial thoughts on the UK elections. 1. It confirms once again that when a center-right party veers to the hard right to weaken the far right, it ends up doing the opposite. After purging moderates and going full-on wingnuts and fever swamp, the Tories got decimated by Reform, not Labour. 🧵

The message Reform sent to Tories is that they’re the only serious threat to them, pulling enough votes to let Labour squeak by on their floor. The first time a far-right party did what the nominally left-wing parties have been doing to each other for decades—split their racist vote

It's not quite done here but Labour went from twenty points plus ahead to a ten point lead in six weeks. And that Reform vote is a lot of that Tory vote. Look at those numbers and tell me this Labour majority is one that lasts another election.

The results in much of the country show transphobia is not a vote-winner on its own. Tervert single issue parties were left in the mud, prominent transphobes across all parties lost their seats and Streeting and Starmer, having personally pivoted heavily towards bigotry, barely got over the line

Meanwhile, Labour have 35% of the vote share. That's less than 3 percentage points more than the 2019 Worst Election Result Ever. This isn't a Labour victory. Its Tory bloodbath.

Even more important to resist this, because it is demonstrably not true. Corbyn held Islington North. Sinn Fein have the most seats in NI. Plaid have the whole West Coast of Wales. The Greens qon Herefordshire North with a majority of 5k (unthinkable yesterday). People want more than just Starmer.
