“If the amount of happiness is increased by any costume, it is right to wear it.”

This also covers furries, I'm assuming.

That's what's great about a well-articulated principle: It is easily applied to situations beyond what was originally intended.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the acceptableness of garb is directly proportional to the adjacency to wealth (ie, the wearer is as rich as Croesus and/or the clothing is expensive). Therefore, it is self-evident that much of furry couture is not only acceptable but to be envied.

We got a whole world full of people we should persuade to be well-mannered like Valcourt describes.

It's a lovely idea that the strong, should they need to go after someone, should only go after those who are capable of responding with equal strength. Dignified. Like, truly dignified. (It'd also spell the end of most right-wing political perspectives)

"Punch up, not down" has a lineage

I love this painting (c. 1924) of Una, Lady Troubridge, by Romaine Brooks:

her waist is narrower than her head

Just because you're wearing a man's suit doesn't mean you have to take it easy on the corset! 🤪

A delightful piece of fashion history! #FashionHistory

i wonder if they thought the same about men wearing feminine clothing

Likely too big a stretch to be directly stated in an etiquette book in 1866, but the application of the principle is clear.

Huh. I don’t think it was ever symmetrical. Even today a woman is a suit is hot while a man in a sundress is weird

In lots of subcultures, or even just cultures, men in frocks are accepted or even considered hot. (Goths, scots, vicars)
Avatar
true! but those were considered masculine in their respective cultures. the question is whether what was considered feminine to wear was ok for men to wear

It's only weird if you're a transphobic bigot.

Something with your words didn't work right there

That last statement would be challenged if this was reversed
