The lower 48 states just had the warmest winter in 130 years of record-keeping, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Temperatures were more than 5 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than average.
U.S. has warmest winter on record – and no, that's not a good thingwww.npr.org From lack of snow to wildfires, a record-warm winter had impacts across the country. Scientists say winters are warming faster than any other season in the U.S.

Came across these today and they fit well

It is cost effective, it just doesn't earn money for the right people so it won't happen.

I agree that ultimately fixing the current environmental situation will only happen if it’s profitable. So, we’re fucked essentially. The fact a oil exec recently said we’re to blame just illustrates we’re screwed. There aren’t enough guillotines in the world to fix it.

Can't make money if there aren't any fucking people

If only the oligarchs thought like that.

We have to try. To have enough guillotines.

probably the coldest winter we will have from now on

I hope everyone realizes that because of normal water and air currents being disrupted by climate change, the polar vortex effect will make some parts of winters far colder, but overall the winter will always be warmer on average.

While temperatures overall will get warmer, it's important to acknowledge that this will lead to extreme shifts. You will also experience the coldest winter you can possibly imagine in your area in the next ten years
Avatar
That's a good point. The destabilization of the Jetstream, or whatever, allowing Arctic air masses to fly south for the winter and whatnot.
Avatar
Europe may actually enter a new ice age, as the rest of the planet gets hotter. It's counterintuitive before you realize that most of Western Europe is actually WARMER than it should be for that latitude.
Avatar
you might experience the coldest day, or the coldest spring, but overall over the whole season it will probably just keep getting warmer like it has for the last decade.

Everyone fifty and older I work with be like, "this is so nice I loved this winter; please don't be mad about it!"
Avatar
Im going to be charitable to your coworkers and not comment in detail.

My boomer mom says shit like that, and it drives me nuts. She was happy to find out we've lost 75% of our bug biomass because "I hate bugs". When I explained why that is bad, she said, "I don't care, just get em away from me." She is, of course, loving the warm winters without a care in the world.
Avatar
That would legitimately make me so mad I'd probably yell at them.

I’m in Montréal and it’s like mid to late April out there! No snow, the ground is thawing, the skunks have been out of hibernation for 2 weeks already. I’m 71 and I love having a few blizzards during winter. That’s easier when retired of course. 😁 Curse global warming! 🤬

I grew up with Reagan's 1989 Climate report....I am mad about +1.5C 😑🌡️🔥⛽

but those snowballs in congress tho

The planet isn’t dying, it is being killed, for money, and the people responsible have home addresses

Once again tapping the sign.
It's only the "Lower 48" if it's from Alaska between January 3 and August 21, 1959. Otherwise it's just sparkling "Contiguous 48".

Which is 4°C for those who dont feel temperature in Fahrenheit. Still shockingly warm!

maga: "No, it wasn't." Meanwhile, RI didn't even get a foot of snow this winter. That's INSANE. The hurricanes that will hit FL when their ocean temps hit 90 will be biblical.

The Hurricane that hits Greenland is going to require arks.

What if we just try more denial to fix it?

I have an idea and it's called reducing the carbon footprint

It was 70 degrees F last Sunday in Minneapolis but below zero F a week before. It has been very strange and unsettling.
Avatar
Yes. Every year is the warmest summer or winter or both. It will continue this way until the violent overthrow of capitalism or we die
Avatar
Avatar
It was deeply surreal. We had only 2 weeks of really cold temps and spring started a full month early. How anyone denies the climate has changed is beyond me.
Avatar
Fahrenheit? What’s that in real degrees?
Avatar
Fahrenheit is a scientific temperature scale, you just aren’t used to using it. Arbitrarily saying one is real and the other is not is just silly. It is also very easy to convert or search online for. If you’re going to be so picky, you should use an absolute temperature scale.
Avatar
It’s acient and out of dare, only used by one backward country. The world has long moved on to SI, including Celsius and Kelvin.
Avatar
So what? Lots of countries do different things. For science and engineering in the US, Celsius is used. But in daily life, people stick to what they are comfortable with. I can do both scales in my head and they both mean the same thing. Neither is out of date.
Avatar
And US customary units have been indexed to Si units for like a century and a half, and actually make more sense in certain contexts, such as a human-relatable temperature scale and more granular and relatable flight level units, which is why the whole world uses feet and not decimeters.
Avatar
SI wouldn’t recommend decimetres (if that’s what you mean a deci-meter is a device for measuring decis). The normal unit for height is the metre. People who were taught arithmetic at school, will understand what 10.4 metres means. The imperial init surviving in aviation is a consequence of inertia
