A recurring thought I've had for some time now is "There's not even zombies" which always arrives in the same cadence as "I'm not even supposed to be here today" from Clerks.

I'm guessing there will be some overlap with edtech, let's go see.
Fomenting panic on the U.S.-Mexico border has created, not just a massive surveillance infrastructure, but also billions of dollars for technology vendors. @eff.org has compiled a public dataset of companies that are selling equipment to the DHS.
Hundreds of Tech Companies Want to Cash In on Homeland Securitywww.eff.org The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today has released a near-comprehensive dataset of the vendors who supply or market the technology for the U.S. government’s increasingly AI-powered homeland

I told students recently that I feel I'm entitled to frustration, but not so much despair. I think this is true for many people. Everyone's means will look different, everyone's occasion to agitate will as well. Sometimes you're handing out water. Sometimes you're in front of someone else.
/4 This is not a call for despair or surrender. The country has been through terrible things. Fight with the means appropriate to the occasion, work to protect and defend people weaker than you, and agitate, agitate, agitate. Never let them be totalitarian without being called out as totalitarian.

I should be used to goodbyes but hitting send on the email to the teaching faculty I adore to tell them I'm leaving has been the worst one. I was going to bug digital studies students! I was going to propose a class on platforms and aesthetics with the best weirdos in English.

Newsletter: Goldman Sachs has called BS on Generative AI, and I believe that it's time that everybody follows suit - generative AI is unreliable, unsustainable, requires an entire rebuild of America's power grid, and is most decidedly not the future. www.wheresyoured.at/pop-culture/
Pop Culturewww.wheresyoured.at A week and a half ago, Goldman Sachs put out a 31-page-report (titled "Gen AI: Too Much Spend, Too Little Benefit?”) that includes some of the most damning literature on generative AI I've ever seen. ...

I am not kidding when I say that Romancing the Vote has out-organized and done more to materially improve conditions in the southeastern US than any explicitly leftist org. Romancelandia ain't here to fuck around.
Bree says: we also have some very high value items where another will be offered to the runner-ups if they match the highest bid. Last year we pulled in $20k on that alone. This year we're MUCH more organized about it. 💗

Nik Suresh is on Ed Zitron’s podcast suggesting he’s not aware of another industry that has been infiltrated by people who don’t know what they’re doing like IT management but I submit to you: education has the same problem.

Administrators who’ve clearly never used Workday went on about how efficient it would make the institution and now they’re actually going to lose money because the people doing the work are buried in jobaids.

I wish we’d talk about this more. Absolute unforced errors on top of permanent crisis states at so many places. It’s like they all got the “Cut humanities, migrate to Workday, troll the faculty into doing work senior leadership should have done, whoops exigency” playbook.
Things are so much worse at many of these places than it seems. There’s a whole bunch of R2 universities rn that have been mismanaged almost into the ground that are barely surviving, but you’d never know it from the outside. In some cases their US News rankings have actually gone way UP, bizarrely.

Too bad publishers are too busy suing Internet Archive and obstructing most development from libraries or else maybe they could stop this. Oh well!

Let’s be clear: Grants Pass has always sucked. Southern Oregon is a ruin of minimum wage jobs, parasitic new age cults, and many people who would rather exterminate the poor than have to see them—let alone provide meaningful help.
