The irony is thick with this one, Nature. Why do journals do this? I mean, seriously.

Had no volume on when Andress came on to do the National Anthem at the Home Run derby and I looked up and said to my son "Something seems really wrong with her - she looks really sick". I am not surprised the anthem was bad and wish her the best in recovery in rehab. www.cnn.com/2024/07/16/e...
Ingrid Andress says she’s checking into rehab after viral national anthem performance: ‘I was drunk last night’ | CNNwww.cnn.com Country music artist Ingrid Andress has responded to backlash over her performance of the national anthem on Monday at 2024 Home Run Derby.

Don’t sleep on the Kia EVs. Well regarded and reliable, AWD options, good range. Not sure what clearance you need for offroad, but should be fine on dirt roads for birding, etc. EVs require a different mindset for range, but don’t need to be more constraining than a hybrid.

I mean, we all know this is a lie (and a particularly transparent one), but like, if you spend weeks attacking your opponent for being unable to communicate without a teleprompter, you might want to practice your "what if the teleprompter goes out" skills before a big public appearance.
You can’t make this up

Once again, Teen Vogue and People Magazine doing the work that the Washington Post and NY Times refuses to do.
Vance is a Theil-backed bag of shit in a man suit. But Teen Vogue went ahead and did an explainer on all the reasons why. (And is it just me or does he look like a colorized Bela Lugosi character here?)
Every Gen Z Issue JD Vance Is Againstwww.teenvogue.com From guns, and climate change to abortion and LGBTQ rights, the Republican VP is being called “Anti-Gen Z.”

Am looking to get new car. Current 97 Highlander Hybrid is 18, has 170K miles. Looking for suggestions for vehicle that * is somewhat off-road capable (more than Highlander) * some electric capability (probably PHEV) * not too small so could be used for family trips * reliable, comfortable, & fun

And note - my current car is a 2007 not 1997 model

2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid here. I get a little over 40 mpg. I think the major off-road issue would be whether it has clearance if you're thinking rocks, etc. Mine has handled muddy fields and I know folks who take them out on the beach, but it won't have the clearance of, say, an F-150.

I like my 2018 Toyota Rav 4 hybrid. Not too big, not too small. I don't know about off road capability, but it is AWD. It's been very reliable for 4 years and about 60K miles. I get a little over 30 mpg. It's not an electric though :(

I really like my Subaru Crosstrek, which has done well enough in limited off road use for such an easily drivable city car. They discontinued production of PHEV models, though, but hybrid available and I think expanded EV options coming soon.

Sad about the passing of Richard Simmons. I had a fun interaction withim him at Tedmed in 2013 and a discussion about microbes. It ended with this:

OK while driving in Davis today I thought I saw Prof. Michael Turelli driving near me and did a completely goofy gesticulation to him. So - either Prof. Turelli is wondering if I am OK or someone who looks like him is saying "That guy s really weird" ...

Maybe the Democrats should look to the sports world for ideas for what to do about Biden - maybe buy out his “contract” to be the candidate by offering something valuable but spread out over years with Bobby Bonilla - how about a different Cabinet position every year for life?

In the Davis/Sacramento area today, pretty much all the birds I saw had the bills open, I assume to cool off. #Birds
