Juneteenth is a federal holiday. But in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas; Republicans have passed laws to prevent teachers from teaching kids why.

It's only a bribe if the two of you go down to city hall to have a notary certify your agreement in writing to do an act in your official capacity that you otherwise would certainly not do but for the consideration of money by the other person, otherwise who can tell

There are lots of things to get outraged about, including some judges (especially a particular federal judge in Florida and several Supreme Court justices) doing bad biased abnormal things to help Trump, but this really isn’t one of them.
Why did the Georgia Court of Appeals stay the proceedings below pending the appeal? Because, as far as I know, that is what it always does. Here's a 2022 Supreme Court of Georgia case explaining: Sanders v. State, 313 Ga. 191, 193 (Ga. 2022)

Love how @RepRaskin trolls Roberts love 4 ⚾️▶️ "Professional baseball would never allow an umpire to continue to officiate the World Series after learning that the pennant of one of the two teams competing was flying in the front yard of the umpire’s home." 🔥 (3/4)

At 10a, SCOTUS is due to release opinions. We could get the Trump immunity ruling. Alito could even be writing in the case, despite the fact that Wednesday’s letter, far from answering the ethical questions, only solidified the basis for them. www.lawdork.com/p/sam-alito-...
Sam Alito believes you — and, perhaps, his colleagues — are stupidwww.lawdork.com Alito defiantly refused to recuse himself from January 6 or Trump-related cases in a letter sent to members of Congress on Wednesday.

Between Trump’s literal groping of the American flag, the Alito’s’ assortment of insurrection flags, the MAGA obsession with Trump flags, the “thin blue line” flag for police, and the long-standing obsession with the Confederate flag, we really need an in-depth study of the right’s obsession.

I think they're also making a mistake in viewing recusal as the primary goal. The aim should be sustained media attention on the circles Alito is travelling in, the ideologies he's embraced, and the Court's corruption.

Forcing Justices to explain their conduct that is viewed by the public as biased or inappropriate is essential. Ending impunity begins w/forcing acknowledgement of problematic conduct. That’s why it matters that Justice Alito understood that he had to stop pouting and write. Keep the drumbeat going.

Now pause a moment and think about the possibilities of re-ordering how this country thinks abt our most revered business leaders, musicians, writers, politicians, scientists, universities, judges prior to 1954 & imagine a “reordering” of those who competed when the game was fixed by segregation.
Congrats to the GOAT for getting the recognition he’s deserved for a long, long time. As of yesterday, Josh Gibson now officially holds the MLB record for batting average, slugging, and OPS.

Chilling story here from Judge Tatel. While Shelby overturned the formula determining which places were covered under the VRA's preclearance condition, preclearance as a remedy still remains (awaiting a new formula). But in NAMUNDO, SCOTUS nearly killed Sec 5 altogether www.cnn.com/2024/05/29/p...

It's a two-box day at SCOTUS, so we're expecting 3-4 opinions (though it, technically, could be two very long opinions).

Today’s bonus issue of “One First” looks at the Alito flag stories through the lens of judicial humility. Humility is an important component of judicial credibility—and, as Justice Alito’s responses to these stories make clear, it’s completely lacking here: stevevladeck.substack.com/p/bonus-81-w...
Bonus 81: Why Judicial Humility Mattersstevevladeck.substack.com The biggest issue isn't the flags that the Alitos have flown outside their homes; it's that Justice Alito apparently doesn't think it's an issue in the first place

People are missing the larger story behind the "unified Reich" video: It's undeniable that on many fronts, Trump and MAGA are experimenting with how far they can go with overtly fascist/authoritarian modes of politics. It's a test. 1/ New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/1818...
Awful New Info About Trump and “Reich” Video Shows Deep MAGA Sicknessnewrepublic.com Yes, the campaign took down the “Unified Reich” video. Meanwhile, Trump and his allies are aggressively seeding the discourse with fascistic language that’s much, much worse.

Sam Alito is a problem. The real question now is what the court does about it. If that makes things awkward at the court, so be it. It is more important than that. At Law Dork. Read and subscribe now: www.lawdork.com/p/sam-alito-...
Sam Alito is a problemwww.lawdork.com Chief Justice John Roberts must take responsibility for his court. If he does not, what follows will be his legacy — and we’ll have to deal with the fallout.
