The triple threat of misinformation: 1) possessing some specific knowledge, but only in a very narrow context 2) swaggering confidence 3) a huge audience

George Floyd denialists disgust me, they pretend they are arguing facts but we all know that they're really doing it for a reason that starts with r and ends with acism.

ends with the r

Wait OMG, is this the MMA guy? And is that what makes him a choking expert?????
Avatar

Does MMA attract a disproportionate number of MAGAlomaniacs because of its rugged individualist nature, or because of its pro-MAGA management?
Avatar
It’s the hits to the head.

Avatar
It’s kind of like claiming to be an expert on trauma surgery because you’re a serial killer.
Avatar
Not exactly. Choke holds are common in martial arts. But no one dies because they know how to apply them properly & they usually tap out before they lose consciousness. A ref is there to stop it if they do. Many of us who have ever trained even a bit wonder why cops aren't trained to do them right.
Avatar
Because there is no incentive for cops to not harm folks this way 🤷‍♂️ I'd say the wrestlers are the professionals in this scenario and the cops are rogue.
Avatar
Lost opportunity for the simultaneously shittiest/funniest spectacle ever: this choad as an expert witness for the defense
Avatar
He may be wrong, but it’s a fact that certain martial arts styles produce the most practical experience in the world of actually choking out and reviving people. But it’s a dangerous practice and sometimes people will just die from it unexpectedly.
Avatar
i bet he has zero experience kneeling on a guys neck until they pass out and seeing if they die or not he also seems to think arteries move air instead of blood
Avatar
I assume you are referring to deaths via cops? Chokes are legal in competitive judo & last I heard, there hasn't been a death in a sanctioned match in about 100 years of organized competition. Same goes for Brazilian jiu-jitsu & MMA. Cops kill with chokes because they hold them on for way too long.
Avatar
There's no incentive to have the person they are choking around in the future either
Avatar
Worse—he’s irrelevant. There was never a claim that Chauvin choked Floyd to death. It’s a red herring.
Avatar
Tbf to the fella, he seems about as sharp as a box of hair.
Avatar
Yeah but wrestling choking is different than police restraint, right? Like two different disciplines.
Avatar
Police are not well-regarded by martial arts practitioners. Most don’t even train regularly. Whatever it is that police do, I wouldn’t refer to it as a ‘discipline’. Many departments have banned neck restraints entirely. Good article: www.nytimes.com/2023/05/04/h...
Doctors Have Long Warned That Chokeholds Are Deadly (Published 2023)www.nytimes.com Many police departments prohibit their officers from employing the kind of neck restraints a man used in fatally subduing Jordan Neely in the New York City subway.
Avatar
Darn it, the link worked when I found it in search results. I hate the New York Times.
Avatar
No worries, I guess I see what they do as two very distinct things.
Avatar
And then they don't enforce the ban that's in their manuals, so it's meaningless.
Avatar
Avatar
“Specific knowledge” may have been generous.
Avatar
Wait wait wait, need to cut off air...to an artery? I mean, I'm no expert on these things, but I'm pretty sure if there's air in your artery, you're in deep shit (an embolism iirc) Compressing the carotid is a "lethal" chokehold because it causes brain damage even if you don't compress it fully
Avatar
Only if you hold it on for an absurdly long time. Which this cop did.
Avatar
Except the carotid had nothing to do with Floyd’s death. He died of positional asphyxiation.
Avatar
...which I forgot and which explains even more why the guy was a dipshit.
Avatar
Right, his lungs couldn't reinflate due to the racist asshole on him if I'm remembering correctly
Avatar
Which, of course, has nothing to do with his neck.
Avatar
It’s like the guy read a blog post about how chokeholds work and declared himself a Leading Expert on All Things Related To Choking
Avatar
No, he really is an expert on choking. Just look at his UFC career.
Avatar
It's horrifying that he used a technique in MMA matches that he thought would kill his opponent. Cutting off the artery can cause relatively quick unconsciousness but should not be deadly. In contrast, a chokehold that cuts off the airway takes time to achieve unconsciousness and may be lethal.
Avatar
Of course, using an armhold around the neck might cut off blood and oxygen, which is why police should not use chokeholds. And, the submission technique used by Chauvin was only intended to be used very briefly because it can be lethal, as the training materials introduced at trial indicated.
Avatar
Generally speaking, people doing chokes in grappling are looking for blood chokes, not air.
Avatar
Dude please Google asphyxiation thx
Avatar
Avatar
who in the world are these nutters trying to convince? the jury didn't buy this bullshit the first time.
Avatar
I think the goal, other than convincing themselves, is to try to roll back some of the public opinion that was shifted by this case. A lot of people saw a video of cops straight up murdering a man and certain goons are desperate to say, nothing to see here, it doesn't mean what you thought.
Avatar
even then if we believe this moderately revisionist history, the argument is then "chauvin just sat on him as he died, entirely by coincidence, without rendering medical assistance" which strikes me as also bad.
Avatar
Avatar
Shall we mail him your three parter. Like, you've already done the work. This asshat needs corrected, but I doubt he's being intellectually honest with this anyway.
Avatar
Kate Manne-ass "it's not choking it's strangling" but even worse
Avatar
"I'm one of the top experts in bullshit detection in the world and..."
Avatar
He chokes his girlfriends and/or wife. That is what he's actually telling us.
Avatar
Cut off air to the carotid artery.
Avatar
Avatar
How does one become a top expert on choking and strangling, and why would that ever be considered a *good* thing?
Avatar
He's an MMA fighter. So that's his so-called qualification.
