#RS500 186 I'm just gonna repeat what I said for Californication and add that it's exhausting how much try-hard there is this go round. The strenuous attempts to be so many things -- funky, cool, smart (Bukowski lmao), sexy, political -- it's like, just breathe my dudes. Fave song: The Bridge
#RS500 286 RHCP were in the air a lot when this came out but this is my first time listening to the whole thing. I don’t care for the prog-funk and frat rap or the tres Y2K themes, but AK has a cool voice, the ballads go down easy, and I enjoyed the quirky anomaly Right On Time. Fave song: Otherside

#RS500 187 A time capsule from the "rap is Black America's CNN"* era and the thing about that is, sitting down to an hour of Black CNN from 1990 takes some fortitude. Some powerful stuff here for sure (and some pretty hateful stuff) but it's a lot for one sitting. Fave song: AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted

#RS500 188 A favorite of mine for a good 5-year stretch. Not many people did so many things so well as Bolan. Guitar, voice, melodies and for my money some of the most fun and genuinely odd lyrics of the psychedelic era. Not to mention basically inventing glam rock. Fave songs: Jeepster; Girl

#RS500 189 A fitting swan song for the riot grrrl era. One funny thing I've noticed is that almost invariably when there's a song with an title that suggests it's ironically trying to mimic a pop hit (e.g. Dance Song '97) I'm like, Sorry but you made an unironically great song. Fave song: Dig Me Out

And I’ll add for the millionth time that one of the reasons the times said it didn’t need a public editor anymore was because it was now responsive to readers on social media — and then immediately began categorically dismissing any criticism on social media
For about the millionth time, I’ll just say — having a public editor who could ask people how this happened and lay it out for readers would actually make the paper look better than fucking up this badly and then walking away from it without saying a word.

#RS500 190 The thing is they were in their early/mid 20s. Whenever I’m tempted to nitpick Tommy’s many flaws I remember what an insane ambition and very worthy accomplishment it was given that. And its pretensions never overwhelm the rock n roll core (largely due to Moon). Fave song: Pinball Wizard

#RS500 191 I love how this album truly goes for broke. The jazz standards are some of the best interpretations I've ever heard and the blues tracks are equally powerful. Only the stabs at trendy early 60s proto-rock/R&B fall a little short. Fave songs: Stormy Weather; I Just Want to Make Love to You

I actually think there’s a case to be made that “the girlies I like are underage” is meant to be taken as a dig at Jimmy Page more than an actual boast

#RS500 192 One of the biggest albums of my high school days, not just bc it made my Stuy Phys Ed shirt instantly cool. Haven't listened in years under the impression it didn't age well but cartoonish misogyny aside it kinda has. The swagger and chaos of classic Looney Tunes. Fave song: The New Style

#RS500 193 A good reminder that CCR is much more than their greatest hits, as great as those are. Willy touches everything from folk jams to Buddy Holly riffs to apocalyptic psychedelia. I didn't know Don't Look Now, which cleverly turns Fortunate Son on its head. Fave songs: Fortunate Son; Effigy

This is a delightful story
The entire genre of dancehall (more or less) came about when a reggae producer repurposed a "rock" beat he accidentally discovered on a casio kid's toy keyboard. People recently discovered the long-anonymous Japanese woman who programmed the beat was in fact a huge reggae fan and scholar.
Okuda Hiroko: The Casio Employee Behind the “Sleng Teng” Riddim that Revolutionized Reggaewww.nippon.com The “Sleng Teng” riddim revolutionized reggae music in the mid-1980s, and has spawned hundreds of versions in the decades since then. Less well known is the story of how the distinctive bassline origi...

#RS500 194 I'd never say anyone should refuse to listen to music they like bc the artist is, well, Bad. Life's too short for such posturing. But there are times when as a purely emotional response you can no longer stomach it. This is great music. If you can still enjoy it I envy you. I skipped it.

#RS500 195 Inarguably one of the Big 3 literary lyricists* but though he has many songs I love (some on this album) I generally find him too austere and cerebral (especially on this album) to listen to as much as Bob & Joni. His guitar work here ominous! Fave song: Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye

#RS500 196 Tracks 1-8 is one of the greatest pop music runs of the 2010s. I have to think if the arrangements had been more radio- rather than club-friendly this would've been the massive hit it should have been. It's like Britney, Taylor, Pink & Gaga rolled into one. Fave song: Call Your Girlfriend

#RS500 197 Paul McCartney once told me he and John started writing songs because all the local bands had the same repertoire of covers and once they got big enough to headline the opening acts would have played all their material. I guess it worked out for them. Fave song: I Want To Hold Your Hand

#RS500 198 An indisputable classic and important for its time but honestly not my go-to B-52s. It’s pretty basic and very repetitive, down to multiple reused hooks. I’ll still listen to individual songs but not the whole album in one sitting. Fave song: Planet Claire

#RS500 199 Oh right, that's why everyone says Pavement is great. The first two albums on this list didn't do it for me (now or then) but working our way backward we've reached their wildly excellent debut, which I must've forgotten I liked because I got so sick of them later. Fave song: Summer Babe
#RS500 265 Sorry, still no. Once again there are a few songs I like but it's not something I would ever choose to listen to, either then or now. In WZ's favor, it does feel slightly less repetitive than Crooked Rain. I was able to listen without checking my watch too much. Fave song: Kennel District

#RS500 200 Of course it’s the silky voice you hear most and then that smooth sax (which I find kinda annoying) but none of it works without the rhythm section swinging jazz, classic soul, Afrobeat, even Moroder-style disco, just carrying everything along seamlessly. Fave song: Hang on to Your Love

#RS500 201 *gets up on my old man soapbox* They don't make hip hop like the Native Tongues crew anymore. The joy, the intellect, the spirit, the humor, the laid back confidence, and of course the skills. The combination was perfection and rarely more so than on this album. Fave song: Oh My God

#RS500 202 For decades I've had this idea that I don't like Björk's music despite having never really listened to it. So it's a relief to discover I was right this whole time. Hey, someone has to be the everyone in "not for everyone." Fave song (the only one I actually do like quite a bit): Joga

#RS500 203 An underrated “you know you’re gen x” signifier is if you discovered Nick Drake from that Volkswagen ad. The quasi-classical guitar with that ethereal voice is like some fae alchemy. If there’s one flaw it’s that I sometimes find it almost too beautiful to listen to. Fave song: Which Will

#RS500 2007 This project is really determined to turn me into a Kanye fan in the year of lord 2024 huh? I don't like this as much as 808s but it's leagues better than Yeezus. Insane samples and electric flow. He should start a church and run for president! Fave songs: Can't Tell Me Nothing; Stronger
#RS500 244 With the first Kanye on the list I was relieved I didn't like it much so I wouldn't have to feel conflicted. But this one, honestly, I love it. Of the albums I wasn't familiar with it's one of the best so far. Whatever. I grew up loving Roald Dahl and TS Eliot too. Fave song: Heartless
