We make do
Mayor Eric Adams, asked by a reporter about the lack of air conditioning at migrant shelters during a heat wave, says, "Every day New Yorkers don't have air conditioners. We make do." He recommends paper fans and says his mom told him to put his head in the refrigerator. —Emma G. Fitzsimmons, NYT

#RS500 176 I'd forgotten how much this album is almost high art sound collage. Funky as shit but the beats are almost secondary to the overall sonic soundscape. Meanwhile Chuck D is veering into slam poetry territory. Totally electric and still nothing else like it. Fave song: Fight the Power

#RS500 177 I like this album OK but it feels a little phony to me. Take the Dylan and Hardin covers. Interesting choices but for all the homespun instrumentation they pale emotionally in comparison to the originals. Title track would be my fave if not for the casual racism so, fave song: Maggie May

#RS500 178 Stuffed with classics from Sam Cooke covers to the original of Respect. I love how Otis sounds equally great whether he's grooving so hard he can barely form words, as in Down in the Valley, or crooning in the most painfully articulate way as in my fave song: I've Been Loving You Too Long

There's a nice parallel with how Otis basically said Respect turned out to be a demo for Aretha and the Stones said Satisfaction turned out to be a demo for Otis (in the latter case, Keith literally wrote the guitar riff with horns in mind)

I was feelin' kinda lonesome and blue I needed somebody to talk to So I called up the operator of time Just to hear a voice of some kind "When you hear the beep It will be three o'clock" She said that for over an hour And I hung up --Bob Dylan, Talkin' WWIII Blues
I shit you not. There used to be a phone number you could call to get the time and temperature

I have never seen a better poster that is so completely wrong for its movie
British poster for D.A. Pennebaker's legendary Bob Dylan documentary DON'T LOOK BACK (1967). Pennebaker was BOTD in 1925.

#RS500 179 Biggie's matter-of-fact, understated drawl brings so much more menace to gangsta rap than the rat-a-tat attack of the cohort that preceded him. That and his eye for detail makes him feel like the real deal. I don't need a double album, personally, but it's good stuff. Fave song: Hypnotize

Forgot to do my obligatory callout of a Dylan pastiche. Interestingly this one, while clearly emulating songs from Highway 61, also anticipates Tangled Up In Blue
#RS500 180 I mean this in the most complimentary way possible: Love sounds (and looks) like a band created for a movie about a fictional 60s rock band. Not the biggest or the best but every aspect is the platonic ideal of the form (yes, partly because they helped create it) Fave song: Alone Again Or

Honestly this is probably one of the things I learned it from

The only reason I'm enjoying posting through the #RS500 is my decision from the start to pretend it's just an unranked list of great albums
Avatar
Oh right, I forgot Say Nothing is another history. But yeah, ranking anything is just a gimmick. Just put out a list with no numbers (unless, of course, you want people to read the list)
Avatar
But even the nonfiction is entirely memoir and sociology (plus one Caro history). The dismissal of narrative history -- no Larson, Grann, Macintyre, etc -- is very telling

I won't say it didn't cross my mind, but there were only 6 books I marked as "want to read" so the idea of spending 25 years on the others is not appealing!
Avatar
Learning to recognize literary fiction as a genre that happens to not be my favorite, rather than the default category for "good books", was liberating for me. The fact that I've only read 14 of these doesn't mean I'm not well-read, it means this list is way too heavy on one particular genre.

I'm very well-read, it's well known!

“There’s no s!” is the thing I yell at the screen more than “don’t go in there!”
As a guy with a bible degree it takes me out of movies (especially horror) when basic xtian/bible gaffes are made so in Longlegs when a character say “the book of Revelations” I was like, there’s no ‘s.’ And then a character immediately says, there’s no ‘s’! Good movie!

The way I think of it is: political activism isn't about selecting the best (or even least bad) president. It's about always working to create the conditions under which necessary changes can happen. A Dem administration won't be the change, but it will clearly be a better environment for the change
