There are lots of botanical terms to describe the corolla (collective term for the petals). This week Iโ€™ll illustrate a few, starting with valvate. The petals (or corolla lobes) touch in bud but donโ€™t overlap, like the 3 petals of Hydriastele dransfieldii (#Arecaceae). #corolla #Botany ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿงช

Always been the biggest and reddest of flags that Dems insist on nominating a right-leaning centrist and taunting the left "Whaddya gonna do, vote for the GOP fascist?" instead of nominating any mildly left-of-center candidate and taunting the center "Whaddya gonna do, vote for the GOP fascist?"

I think maybe everybody has that Place. It's like your Fortress of Solitude. It's a Place where, when you go there, the world seems easier, better, like nobody's after you. For me, that Place might always be my parents' back yard, behind the house I grew up in. It's something I can rely on.

In more fun news, my son's toy crocodile, Kyle, who started out about four inches long, has now been soaking in water for a couple days and we may need to get a bigger bowl for him since he's already over a foot long.

We went out for a nice day; book store and dinner. I explicitly do ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต do social media when I go out (the only one even installed on my phone is IG). Overheard waitress talking to a nearby table and saying "Poor [him]!" Looked at my wife and knew what we'd be in for when we got back and logged in.

Dr Ruth seemed pretty cool, and also she was one of the few exceptions to the "famous living people ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ญ๐˜บ in cameos" rule on the original Quantum Leap, and I was totally good with that because she was really fun on that episode and Scott Bakula did the same rough imitation we all did and it worked.

I remember reading Timothy Zahn's Star Wars sequels way back in the day (before almost everything was Star Wars) and the characters were introduced to "hot chocolate" and this did not in any way blow my mind because, for one, "Why the fuck ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต?" and for another, "Lando sipping hot cocoa, dig it."
a twitter post that comes back to me a lot was someone saying that you shouldn't write a fantasy book with tea in it without explaining the agricultural and mercantile system that would allow the characters to obtain tea and like. not only is that not how fantasy works thats not even how tea works!

Shout out to the pretentious publishing agent I met (who proudly declared he worked with Harvey Weinstein) who insisted he "hates coincidence" in stories, as if any interesting story ever written does ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต wholly rely on at least six improbable coincidences happening in order for the plot to exist.
At a certain level all fiction involves writers wilfully flouting probability in some way shape or form to give some form to the void of a blank page, and when the work is designed to be impossible from the start?

Poster says their friend has "outdated" ideas about how TTRPGs should work. First comment asks "Such as?" Second comment is basically "Like what?" Then the poster disables comments. What a passive-aggressive way to say you've got non-universal opinions on the subject and don't wanna be challenged.

Witnessing current United States politics is weakly analogous to watching old Dukes of Hazzard through a modern lens: we the audience are forced to root for a bunch of good ol' boys who proudly paint a Confederate flag on the top of their muscle car because the other side is cops.

My pre-literate two-year-old with the apparently eidetic memory loves the Star Wars books he got for his birthday, and somehow manages to pronounce "Nien Nunb" better than anybody else I've ever heard attempt it.

So this is where I end up. It's the ineffective and incompetent or the actively malicious. But I feel like a lot of the "alternatives" being proposed are predicated on some wild levels of magical thinking, and I don't think that's any more useful than the "unicorns" shit liberals keep saying.

The lack of any meaningful third-party representation in Congress, where it is *vastly easier and cheaper* to win elections, is an illustration of how unserious American third parties are. There are *tons* of uncontested local offices around the country that could be feeders for third party Reps.
Avatar
This also goes for the leftists saying "We should just vote third party!" Cool, but like, which third party do we rally behind? Is that candidate on the ballot in enough states to even have a mathematical chance at winning?

I'd like to offer an experiment: give me literal billions of dollars and see if I pay my taxes. 'Cause, y'know, ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ of us aren't going to be revolting douchebags even if we have ludicrous amounts of money. (Also, I'd donate absurd amounts toward medical and social welfare. Happy to.)

In retrospect, the ten year period between the dissolution of the USSR and 9/11 was an incredibly boring time to be alive and none of us appreciated it properly at the time.

Today I learned: Maurice Sendak's first paid gig as an illustrator was when his high school physics teacher hired him to illustrate "Atomics for the Millions" (1943). ๐ŸŽข๐Ÿงชโš›๏ธ collectingchildrensbooks.blogspot.com/2009/03/arts...

Listen, I don't care about celebrity, and I don't idolize pretty much anybody (three possible exceptions). So when you all keep posting about an artist/writer/actor/scientist/athlete/whatever in dire straits, the tears streaming down my face are because they're ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ, not because they're celebs.
