it sort of beggars metaphor that incredibly rich people are consuming enormous quantities of electricity and potable water to make play money for themselves. it's the kind of thing that would seem too blunt to be clever satire in a sci-fi series.
Everyone should know by now that Bitcoin mining is an energy hog, but apparently cooling mining rigs also slurps down vast quantities of water too: more than the total water use of New York City apparently! Gift link here www.wsj.com/science/envi...

They aren't *making* money. They are participating in a scheme that can transfer money to them if they are able to get other people to follow them but will leave the last ones in broke.

I couldn't even write something like this in Shadowrun. And it's a cyberpunk corporate dystopia with dragons!

Crypto is more of a “stupid people” thing than a “rich people” thing tho to be fair

AI uses massive quantities of water as well

Wait until you find out how much water the NSA uses in the Nevada desert to illegally keep track of all Americans. They can't use any of that data in court because they gathered it illegally, but they keep it anyway.

Can’t they go back to cheating on taxes via fine art??!

Carbon capture takes as much water in Iowa as the agriculture...!

Uhh, nobody is paying a utility for cooling water. When I worked for Google building their datacenters, the water they used for cooling wasn't usually potable. Some of it was greywater, some of it was seawater, just depended what was cheap, available, and would have the least environmental impact.

I so, so wish we could just improve water consumption policy. Like, real severance fees representing actual impacts. Same for fuel and carbon emissions. People (this is the rich people here especially) just love to modify their behavior to exploit loopholes in the law that let them externalize gain.

whats important to remember is that no one with any power to change things will do anything to change things and we'll continue to watch the slow motion car crash of capitalism numb on pills with tv on in the background

where does gold mining fit in that description? Assuming a fraction of gold mined goes to productive use and majority is (completely made up) store of value and jewelry use

Can we just BAN it already? Such nonsense and so destructive.

Isn't mining essential to green energy?
