Not convinced. Not a bard because he doesn't sing or carry an instrument, not pretending to be a mage because you have to throw out canon. In AD&D terms (yes I'm from that era) he's a fighter/mage dual class. Can't wear armor because he's also a mage, not the best fighter or mage in the world etc
