this is the case with a *lot* of entertainment from the 90s, a lot of gen-xers have forgotten the ironic detachment component of the 90s as age has been flipping the nostalgia switches and/or the yout' don't know how to pick up on it
I think there's been some counterintuitive championing of both WATERWORLD and THE POSTMAN as being kind of underrated and fun but I think even people who kind of like them should admit that they are not movies that should be expected to be popular with audiences or justify their budgets.
Yeah I'm not a quality nihilist, I think certain eras genuinely have produced better movies than others, but we've got to remember that there's always been an overwhelming amount of garbage produced
