Lot of questions about why Macron called snap elections. One clear factor: By ordering speed campaign, he expected Left could not unite, & so they'd be knocked out in Round 1, helping his own party.
Instead, Left united within days—& now surged to win biggest bloc in Assembly.
Wonder if he was so worried about the right that, while less politically desirable, creating a united left would still be a better outcome for him than letting Le Pen et al become further entrenched.
But. It completely stalled the rightward march that was loudly proclaimed after the EU elections.
What I see is people want change. Offer a viable leftist alternative (and runoff elections) …
This is what I thought he was doing. He could always come back another day, but therr was (is) a different kind of threat here that overrode all the other politics.
