The Oakland Athletics are one of the great teams. Relocating the franchise is a dark day for baseball. But man, I am so happy the Orioles won’t have to play in the Coliseum ever again

In the wake of the British and French election results, expect a wave of concerned editorials about how the right must moderate its extreme positions and rhetoric if it wants to appeal to the majority hahahahahahahahahahaha
The New York Times is always so hopeful.

Macron turned into a textbook example of the left pandering to the right and the elites. It would have hurt my heart to see France go with Le Pen, but I would’ve understood the anger from the betrayals. I hope this can be a fresh start for the left, free of Macron.
JUST IN: Polls closed in France. Exit polls show surprise: —Left coalition (New Popular Front) projected first. (!) —Far-right (RN) has lost its bid to take power. Anti-RN front appears to have worked very well. —No bloc close to majority. Follow this 🧵 for results and more:

Every time I take a vacation I convince myself I’ll write the great American novel and remodel my bathroom. Every time all I manage to get done is maybe vacuuming one room. So much regret

Watch SCAVENGERS REIGN. Watch CAROL AND THE END OF THE WORLD. Watch BLUE EYE SAMURAI. Watch PLUTO. Netflix needs to understand that *original animated series for YA/adults* have value beyond raunchy comedy. There IS an audience for it. They’ll keep canceling them unless they see those numbers.

Man, the Orioles have no luck in Oakland. They could play against the ushers in A's uniforms and still only score a couple runs.

what are we doing here? he accidentally said million instead of billion and then immediately knew it and corrected himself. he didn’t “flub a line” and then “make an effort to correct himself,” he did the speaking equivalent of a typo that you know you’ve made and instantly correct

Following up on one of the restauranteurs who trashed Baltimore before closing his business. It seems like he may have as much as five years of free time to study up on business tax code.

If you’re a music lover like me I highly recommend the documentary Immediate Family now on Hulu about the session musicians who play on like every hit you know from the 70s.

New Wyman Park Restaurant had my favorite diner breakfast in the city. I finally got a chance to try its replacement, Kay’s Place today. The food may have come down a notch but’s still far better than Pete’s at this point

Wages rose 3.3 percent in 2019, 3.9 over the past year. Job growth slowing. The Fed is supposed to get ahead of the curve. Time to cut.

2. Labour held steady in total votes, but combined with the fractured vote on the right, won a historic parliamentary majority. This is in line with trends elsewhere in Europe. The far right rises and wins when the center-left atomizes (Italy, France) and falls short when it holds (Spain, Portugal).

3. I'd been thinking with relief that the UK was bucking the trend of a rising radicalized far right. But I think that was premature. And Labour inherits a catastrophic landscape for governance. It will take near-perfect leadership and a lot of luck to get this right. Otherwise 2029 could be scary.

A lot of talk right now about Heritage President Kevin Roberts - who lusts for a radical rightwing revolution that would punish those he deems enemies of his “real America” so bad that he must talk about it all the time. I dove deep into the extremist worldview of that guy a while ago:
Kevin Roberts believes he’s a noble defender of “real America” against a totalitarian “woke,” “globalist” assault from without and within. “Project 2025” is his declaration of war on multiracial pluralism. I wrote about his extremist worldview here: 1/ thomaszimmer.substack.com/p/project-20...
“Project 2025” Promises Revenge, Oppression, and Autocratic Rulethomaszimmer.substack.com The Right’s plans for a return to power are driven by a radicalizing siege mentality and a desperate desire to restore dominance
