I think metafilter is a site that continues to do this successfully. Also charging a one-time $5 signup fee.

I prefer to think it's taste rather than snobbishness (exactly what a snob would say!), but a big one for me is t-shirt brands (i.e., the shirt itself, not whatever is printed on it). I was radicalized by the monstrosity that is Gildan ultra-cotton.

what's the most minor thing you're the most snobbish about? question brought up by my realisation that I will never pick up a contemporary novel lauded as an international bestseller

(oddly someone there knows what's going on because the gildan soft-style is actually pretty good!)

A friend of mine lived in a rent-stabilized place in the W village and his neighbor returned from an extended trip to find that the guys from the street-level restaurant had RENTED HER PLACE OUT IN HER ABSENCE. They changed her locks and moved her stuff into basement storage.

Coda: the building sold and my friend was bought out by the new owners for 100k (not enough!). The building was historic so they couldn't do much to it until someone *accidentally* did some midnight excavation rendering it structurally unsound. Any (wrist-slap) fines were worth it to these folks.

I learned to speak German when I was very young and living in Oberpfaffenhofen and didn’t learn until my mid 20’s that I apparently have a fairly distinct Bavarian accent. I was in Hamburg and people kept giggling when I spoke.

I gave a talk at a virtual conference two years ago and while editing the audio of the recording I got so I could immediately recognize the waveform for all the "ums".

This feels like a weird moment to post a niche complaint, but it is really annoying that Scientific Reports doesn't require authors to use line numbers but they ALSO don't allow reviewers to upload the submission with annotations. How are we supposed to make decent comments?

I looked into this a while ago and it’s very tricky to book these for passage from one place to another. Almost all (actually all?) berths on container ships are booked through consolidators who sell them as “cruises.” Doesn’t mean it can’t be done, but I never found a way.
