I feel like this is flying under folks' radar, but concrete information has emerged about Crooks' political alignment from people who knew him: he was a staunch conservative. www.thedailybeast.com/trump-rally-...

From the Times’ analysis of the Court’s ultimate betrayal of liberalism yesterday, this wild graph. There is something actually wrong with us if we really believe that six fascists in robes can transubstantiate a monarch where none previously existed. There is no such authority. BUT SUDDENLY, lmao

In my comic book reading group this week we read Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe -- yk, the graphic novel that keeps getting held up and banned by anti-trans lunatics citing great harm to children. And I knew that was nonsense, but y'all it's a wholesome, earnest, illuminating and wildly human delight.

Nvm, I regret to inform everyone that this was cope. Boo, hiss

Harris is doing her job very well trying to clean things up with Anderson Cooper, but by being so sharp and competent it’s really just making Biden look worse. Brutal irony there

Gotta give it to the Times' horserace desk, it's actually hard to come up with a less insightful, more sports-brained take than this

The thing he said marked the turn from protocol to app for him was Bluesky introducing and using moderation tools. People didn’t hallucinate that. Hard to take app-vs-protocol as a basis at face value given he still endorses Twitter, which is virtually the same site, just with no moderation

Can’t blame this on the Palestine solidarity camp — it’s so obviously the fault of Columbia’s administrators, who basically begged the NYPD to annex the campus. To kowtow to a fashy Congress. Desperate to keep their jobs. It really does start and end with Shafik. www.nytimes.com/2024/05/06/n...

Gross — @nytimes.com just wholesale reprinting the NYPD’s numbers-juking in order to cover for the violent police assault Columbia subjected its own students to on Tuesday night. If we had a functioning news media, this level of police stenography would be a huge scandal

Israel’s problem is that after decades of confusion we increasingly *do* understand it. Maybe just once an Israeli leader could demonstrate the capacity to hear and earnestly regard literally any outside view of their country and its actions.

Bruce Robbins on "antisemitism" is being used in discourse around the student protests -- discourse typically led by non-Jewish public figures. It's a whole pull/push routine: Elise Stefanik calls "intifada" antisemitic; a college administrator agrees; to the Times, it's consensus.
Avatar
Oh yeah the connecting thread here is definitely "antisemitism on campus" what the actual hell

Also, this is some of the most never happened shit ever to not happen

And in an instant I realize: 1. President Kamala Harris would be preferable to Joe Biden 2. Using this issue to knife Biden in the back would be phenomenal politics & possibly much better for Gazans in the immediate term 3. Biden vs. Trump after 9 more months of decline & genocide is a terrible idea

Somehow that doesn’t seem like the important takeaway here

This is a big pet peeve of mine: when political analysts and reporters let the line between prediction and reporting get fuzzy. There is no "double-digit loss" for Haley -- yet. The current gap is 8.6%. The needle may well be correct to predict a double-digit final margin, but the model != reality.

This is some wild shit from the Biden Administration. Even by their fucked logic, if the Israeli blockade is stopping them from retrieving American citizens in Gaza, how is the solving of that problem not full-stop, top-ranked, don’t you dare throw another bomb until our people are out?

Would be hard for Israel to more clearly remind the world that the IDF is more depraved than Hamas has ever had the capability to be than by responding to gut-wrenching atrocities with three times as many gut-wrenching atrocities. This is naked, mask-off genocide www.nytimes.com/live/2023/10...

Wow lol it looks like I just plagiarized the article but I hadn’t read it and was just quoting from the memoriam I raved at my group chat earlier this week. The man’s legacy is clear

Maybe I’m wrong about this, but is the Green Bubble Stigma really a “status thing”? Or is it just that iOS users (of all ages) are accustomed to using iMessage features, and when people don’t have iMessage they can’t do that, which is a disincentive to message with them?
Avatar
This post from r/gamedev is wild. Here Valve doesn't just bar any "AI" functionality, but coldly buries this guy's passion project solely for even tinkering with it (added as beta feature, required API key, *and* they'd already removed it)? Meanwhile, Dota2 features bots trained by... OpenAI. Hmm.

It turns out the January 6 committee already reported out this email, but it still totally rules. I'm sure John Eastman has a great explanation for emailing Mike Pence essentially saying "hey, we already obliterated this law, so now you should be fine to break it in the other way we talked about"
Avatar
There is not, bud. You still have zero idea what you’re talking about. You cannot “pirate” an original collection of information about books. This is what the database looks like. You should read the nice and productive threads from last night where we worked through this.
Avatar
Yeah that’s a bad way to phrase it, I can see how that’s confusing! But you wouldn’t want to store the text, really. Word2vec turns words into multi-dimensional vectors that describe their relationship to other words. (src: https://medium.com/@zafaralibagh6/a-simple-word2vec-tutorial-61e64e38a6a1 )
Avatar
Then there’s the product, the text editor for authors. That product did the word2vec stuff on your own writing and incorporated the stats part of prosecraft as a comparative reference. Here’s the only screenshot I have seen, with context:

The dataset doesn’t include the text, it is derived *from* the text. It’s the notebook I described. It is akin to this:
