Thank you! 🩵I hope so! Apparently it was the story I needed to write, but I’ve lost perspective.

Thank you so much David!

There’s this Philip Roth quote “I came here to be insulted!” that I find very helpful. It sucks, but if you’re a trans woman making art, you get insulted—intentionally and inadvertently. But if you remember that by making art, you showed up to be insulted—then they can’t surprise you.

I was briefly on TV in one of the Nordic countries and the only question the interviewer asked was “you wrote a novel about transsexuals…why should anyone else care?” And luckily, I remembered that I had travelled across the ocean to be insulted, & felt pleased that they could offer such a good one

Making your charachter a man on a “Best of” list! Really cherish that one. You came, you wrote, you got the kind of insult that is really the only sign of accomplishment I’ve come to value.

I’ve long lamented Google serving up terrible increasingly SEO-inflected info, but in the last year, I have found myself reading nonfiction books on questions I previously would have asked Google (on everything from Palestine to running routines) and it’s made my day-to-day better.

I went to Berlin a couple years ago! To She Said. It was a good event! But nowhere else in Germany.

You were both nice about it! No need for panic!

The institution of marriage can neither be saved nor reformed, only fetishized.

We got married at the Brattleboro town clerk during covid, celebrated with an ice cream cone, and blew the rest our budget on dresses, jewelry, and vicodin. Would recommend!

With pleasure! Mostly I use a Pilot Metropolitan (because I am afraid of losing anything fancier), but I inherited a Pelikan Souveran that I keep at my desk

Have begun to read various works in order to deduce when the writer has hit two crucial lines of demarcation in a literary career: 1.) when a writer finally learns the names of trees 2.) when a writer starts fetishizing fountain pens (writing less fussy, cuz laborious to re-write)
Avatar
The fountain pen thing, im convinced, results from moments of despair, when one cannot write, and convinces oneself that really the problem is not oneself, but simply the medium.

The Lana Del Rey lyric “like a barge at sea/in a storm I stay clear” betrays a real misunderstanding of barges.
Avatar
Probably she meant, “like a deep V hull with proper ballast/ in a storm I stay clear.”

Yah, clearly I agree. Brandon Taylor has written a fair amount about why he rules, including his most recent substack, if one is looking for verbage.

subskeet? whatever. Sounds gross.

Thank you! I hope it is exciting, but I know it is weird.
