The short version is that we’re *totally fine* with data brokers gobbling up user data on Americans, selling it and using it for whatever sometimes-nefarious purposes they choose. We are not OK with a CCP-linked company doing it. I’m not sure why the latter is a problem but the former isn’t.
I am completely unconvinced TikTok is somehow more harmful to anyone than Instagram Reels.

I agree. But the first part means that anyone can buy this data and then resell it to a CCP-linked entity. So I'm back to we're doing this because Democrats think this is the politically correct censorship we can compromise with the GOP on and pretend that will be enough censorship for the GOP.

I agree with that take, although I do think there are NatSec concerns with TikTok. A proper data privacy law would kill two birds with one stone.

Exactly. TikTok DOES carry serious NatSec concerns and we also SHOULD be addressing this stuff with actual data privacy laws.

I agree. So my question is how is this different from KOSA that says it addresses a real problem -- mental health impacts of social media -- but doesn't and instead is designed to censor information unacceptable to the extremist right?

this is an argument that all social media companies utilize to argue against regulation: I believe we can find a balance.

So I’ve been thinking about this some more. China blocks pretty much all Western social media apps via the Great Firewall and there’s an argument that the US should block TikTok in reciprocity. Yes there are still 1st Am concerns but at least there’s a defensively philosophy behind it.

Aren't Americans in far greater danger from domestic actors using this danger?

Tbh I would far rather the CCP had all that data about me, as they’re much much much less likely to do something awful with it.

Given the brazenness of Chinese Intel operations abroad, their willingness to blackmail foreign citizens by threatening their family in China, and the CCP's belief that all Han Chinese living anywhere in the world should be loyal to the CCP, you might feel different if you or your parents emigrated

Yes, if I were a completely different person in a completely different situation, I would have a completely different risk analysis.

tbh, data security concerns feel like they're missing the real risk -- The TikTok Creator Fund could become a threat to the US economy, if it wanted to
