From what I understand it wasn't even that horrible of a place to live. Lot of poverty and the Platonic ideal a fire code violation, but the people living there were basically good neighbors.
Honestly, like most Brazilian favelas, it appeared to be clean and well run. Source: There's a good coffee table book about KWC with lots of interior photos and interviews, made in view of the coming demolition.
