A jazz musician once told me β€œIf I make a mistake while performing I make sure to do it at least twice more, so people will assume I’m just being avant garde.”

Can confirm -jazz drummer It's an old Miles Davis quote.

Davis said β€œDo not fear mistakes. There are none.”

I'm zealous about this being a perfectly fine way to make music though. It's just Bob Ross's "happy accident" philosophy applied to music! And we love that in painting so why not music! Had to get that off my chest, thanks

It is absolutely standard in jazz improv if you make a mistake to always play it again so it sounds deliberate. But three times? -- that guy WAS avant garde

I was once in a marching color guard. We were taught that if we get lost in our routine, stop and march in place to look like it's intentional. The biggest competition, of course, I had to do this!!! I melted inside but our commander didn't even know it happened so... That kind of planning works.

Accident or ornament? I’ll never tell…

Pretty much yeah. There’s also the thing how as a beginner you just get encouraged to play the wrong stuff then as you advance you’re convinced there’s a right way to do everything only to go back to playing wrong stuff

I've said almost the exact same thing, but applied to rock. There are no mistakes in improvisation.

Agreed. Jazz is just an easier place to hide one’s, um, unintended improvisations.

My favourite choir master used to tell us: β€˜There is no such thing as a wrong note, just a note sung with a lack of commitment.’

I tell my students that if they make a mistake, they have to do the grimace; otherwise the audience won't know.

But how can they tell they made one

That's right. It's not a mistake if you do it that way every time

I’ve done this with lighting. Made a bad judgement or hit the wrong button. And I’m like, β€œwell, let’s just make it look like I meant to do that and do it somewhere again.” Usually works; most people don’t notice or think it was cool.

Also: It's not the note you play that's the wrong note - it's the note you play afterwards that makes it right or wrong. - Miles Davis

Art grows from people making "the wrong way" work for them.
