She did not "clearly lie" in a legal sense. Her statement was worded in such a way that a listener could easily interpret it as being a result of Biden's policies; but that is not a lie in the legal sense. I'm not saying it isn't deceitful, but it is not a lie.
Is there a legal definition of a lie and even if there is why would that matter? Biden was called a liar in public during the State of the Union. No way could that shouter be sued by Biden. Likewise nor could the NYT. In any case it's worse because its a deception, worse for her that is.
I'd prefer the word deceit or deceived, which is actually more damning. Everyone lies, but most people really don't like deception when confronted with it. Trump is successful because he blatantly lies more than deceives.
The worst part for me wasn't that she was dishonest about the story and when it happened. It was the sick pleasure she seemed to take in recounting it in graphic detail.
Looking at this rationally, individual crimes committed by immigrants or in foreign countries aren't the responsibility of federal leadership.
Not Biden's fault, not Bush's fault, not Trump's fault. It's the criminal's fault.
But like preachers turn lies into parables, so do politicians.
Democracy isn't dying in darkness, it is being murdered in plain sight until you people can take a deep breath and CALL LIES LIES, AND THE PEOPLE WHO TELL THEM LIARS. FIRST, LAST AND EVERY TIME. Even if they're coming powerful and connected people you'd really like to keep taking your calls.
Why did it take an independent reporter to uncover this? Where were the major news organizations Thursday night? It's like when Melania Trump plagiarized Michelle Obama and the talking heads just said she did an adequate job....
And what won't happen that would happen if this happened on the left is a FLOOD of stories about how pervasive making up stories is. This will be a onesy and the press will move on. While Britt's national career is over now, she's in AL so she'll still be around as a Senator for a while.
Typical political speak. It might not be an outright lie in the legal sense, but it's worded in such a way that a listener easily draws the erroneous conclusion that the speaker desires them to reach. GOP must resort to such tactics because they have nothing else.
So moms sitting around kitchen tables all across America would lie about something that happened 20 years ago in Mexico City to smear the current president? Did she write that lie herself or did the GOP manufacture it?
As a German with many relatives in 🇺🇸, I am observing very closely the harmful development that is being fueled by current decision-makers in the Republican Party.
Their hatred, incitement, dehumanization are not the values of the Constitution of 🇺🇸.
In 🇩🇪 we had exactly that 1933-45. Didn't end well.
