the other thing though is that the NYT would FOR SURE come up with some anti-Harris narrative and beat it to absolute death for the rest of the campaign

A tragically common cause of death before pasteurization was food poisoning in children who were being weaned and starting to drink cow's milk. Pasteurization is one of the greatest public health successes in the history of the world, and now it's protecting us from H5N1 bird flu 🧪

Wildest story yet in France: 1. Far-right/RN candidate said he was dropping out. 2. Turns out: He lied! He filed last minute. 3. Left (in 3rd) had dropped out, then filed once RN said he was out. She tried to drop out again; but too late. So 3 names remain. www.ouest-france.fr/elections/le...

🎯: “[Trump v. United States] doesn’t change the Constitution any more than a foreign army occupying New England would make Massachusetts no longer part of the United States. That may seem like a jarring analogy. But it’s the only kind that allows us to properly view & react to this Supreme Court.“

Right-wing legal talking heads are focusing on arguing that it is RIDICULOUS to say that a second-term Trump will be empowered by immunity to do horrific things, while carefully preparing to argue in seven months that it is RIGHT that Trump do horrific things which aren’t actually horrific anyway.

weird that a guy who said incredibly racist stuff would run a racist campaign unless you consider the possibility that “it’s racism”
like, “why did Reagan go to a spot near where three civil rights workers were murdered a mere sixteen years previous to campaign on ‘states’ rights’” is not a huge mystery when you consider the possibility that “it’s racism”

Tapping the sign again
So, your continued participation in the farcical Biden debate discourse is doing real work to help CNN justify more pro-Trump content. I know this because they just say it, plainly. Bet it’s true at other outlets too. Could you folks TRY to be a little less gormless? It’s kind of important.

posting this since I distributed the original quote without context, which i have now deleted! sorry yall.

It also goes to the absurdity Sotomayor pointed out about not just immunity but inadmissibility. He could give a speech live from the Oval Office openly and unambiguously confessing his guilt and that couldn't even be used as evidence because a presidential speech is an 'official' act.

When I was writing HOW WE FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES, I privately debated leaving some chapters out. I thought writing about kids asking me if I was saved at the lunch table or my private panic about Matthew Shepard would be too dated to be relevant to readers by the time the book came out in 2019. ALAS.

i think we should see the Trump v. United States ruling as a group of Republican apparatchiks taking their opportunity to vindicate Nixon and write the unitary executive into the Constitution. www.nytimes.com/2024/07/02/o...

Reactionary voting is so funny to me. I also would prefer to not have my neighborhoods shops robbed or destroyed but it does not follow that I’d vote for a racist game show imbecile to address that concern It’s the exact same as telling me to cure my Charley horse you can chop off your own leg…
Entire cities policies have been upended and made more brutal for a generation driven largely off the rhetoric and media fueled fears of a stranger approaching a voter in a “dark alley.” It was only natural that the televised images of the late spring / summer of 2020, coupled with a party leader…

@adamserwer.bsky.socialFrom me: Setting aside everything else, campaign finance laws dictate that the only Democrats who can seamlessly use the hundreds of millions of $$ currently raised for the election are Joe Biden & Kamala Harris. Anyone else would start from scratch.

is torture an official act? are war crimes? both are criminal under U.S. law. what happens to presidential command responsibility? also, if POTUS is immune from prosecution, there is no complementarity. the court has made it easier for the ICC to pursue cases ag american presidents.

People significantly underestimate the degree to which the American constitution is now being defined by Nixon/Reagan/Bush government lawyers who disliked having to be responsive to a Democratic-controlled Congress. Unitary executive theory is an example: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....
Roberts, Alito and Thomas all cut their teeth in a Reagan administration eager to expand the outer limits of executive power. Kavanaugh did the same under George W. Bush who tried to make the unitary executive a reality.

This is why the fascism skeptics who emphasize the weakness of Trumpism have a point: the lack of persistent nationwide crises has made it difficult for the movement to co-opt widespread fear--so they have to gin it up out of whole cloth, which is an uphill battle in ~peaceful prosperous conditions.
I suppose no surprise in a fascist movement, but wild that *this guy* is their heroic ubermensch, and the crisis worthy of destroying 250 years of democracy is ... uh, some historically meager immigration and trans people drinking a beer?

will any of the feckless idiots who have over the years repeatedly assured us of John Roberts' nobility and seriousness of purpose devote their next column to explaining how they came to so thoroughly misunderstand the precise thing their job is to understand, or nah?

One thing I think people forget is how relentlessly *stupid* every day of the Trump administration was. He doesn’t need to do a big elaborate complicated conspiracy, he can just (e.g.) email a list of every U.S. agent in the field to Putin and say it’s to own the libs, and *that* will have immunity.

I really cannot emphasize how catastrophically bad the Court's ruling was. I do my best not to exaggerate about these kinds of things but I am still kind of in shock

it's a deep betrayal when you cannot trust the people whose job it is to interpret the rules. America has been let down today, and we will not forget
