lowkey so obsessed with the translation of “仙” as “empyrean”. which is honestly a perfect translation with perfect cadence/implication, and the use of it in elden ring has radicalized me.

仙 to me is not fairy or fae or anything of that ilk bc those 仙 have a kind of cosmic responsibility that goes beyond their own desires (which is why so many of those stories are fucking tragic) and "celestial" is fine but it doesn't encompass as much. BUT EMPYREAN!!!!!!!

like... "demigod" is widely used and comes from greco-roman myths and doesn't quite have the same weight to me bc their gods are petty and there is not as much gravitas (which is fine in the case of say elden ring sorry i have brainrot) but empyrean to specifically mean "candidate for godhood" is! 🤌

sitting here like we could have simply turned an adjective into a noun this whole time

yeah definitely!! like the "show me a potential mutated virus based on x parameters" thing is actually really hard for human scientists to do which i can see !! & they also use it to generate certain protein sequences. but ofc the likes of sam altman only want big sexy vc dollars & not actual use

generative-- they input sequences of viral dna & ask the computer to output strains of viruses with hypothetical mutations & check it against existing viral dna (iirc). very specific data set, very specific application. but yes machine learning has been used a lot in stem they also told me

had lunch with a friend yesterday who researches zoonotic diseases & they were telling me about one (1) hyperspecific use case for gen ai in their field using a data set of viral dna sequences which was actually useful & like. why do these fuckers hyping it never talk about that? we know why

but also this kind of use case they were telling me is not new to their field or the work they do. but instead of improving these programs for the ppl who actually use it in this case let's keep trying to replace writers & artists & human beings who did not need anything solved w this shit
