it is very normal for ppl in big cities to hate interacting with strangers in public, ppl from toronto are allergic to it. seems strange that this guy thinks it’s about an inherent lack of friendliness and not that high population density and reliance on public transit makes ppl feel rushed.

Plus even in slower places there’s still a line between “friendly” and “gives all the details about one’s recent surgery and messy divorce”

Also, it would be a lot easier to be friendly to strangers if there wasn't a significant chance they vote Republican.

This! I'm a southerner, and an introvert. I'm not against small talk if something occurs to spark it, but I damned sure don't care to hear all your private life and opinions. 🙄😁

I think it’s less about being rushed and more about mutually respecting the little personal space we have in crowded cities.

It's a stereotype of every single metropolis lol, whether it's New York, London, São Paulo, what have you. The only difference in that stereotype between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is that people from São Paulo are passive-aggressive while people from Rio will tell you to go fuck yourself.
