Torn lately between the belief that science fiction literature needs another major movement/genre (new wave, cyberpunk, new weird)… …and the equally strong conviction that anyone who writes a manifesto or proclaims a movement should be put in a sack and whacked with large sticks.

I’ve honestly started believing it’s part of the reason we never prepare or plan for anything (covid, storms, etc) anymore - most people’s cultural memory of the Y2K bug is to mock it for being some kind of overhyped bullshit. it was the hype that stopped it from being a major crisis!
Avatar
it’s exhausting to have to point this out every time the Y2K bug is brought up, but hey: it didn’t do as much damage as was feared because *lots of people worked very hard to raise awareness, prepare, and fix it*

The daughter and I are seeing ARTMS this fall. The Birth and Virtual Angels MVs are fascinating. In fact, it's been a good year+ for interesting, cinematic, SF-ish kpop MVs. See also: IU's Love Wins All; tripleS's Girls Never Die; I-dle's I Do; and Jin's The Astronaut.
There are few acts in K-pop with an artistic approach as distinct as ARTMS, and their meta narrative of integrating their own songs and lore into new works is inspired. What a treat that I got to speak to them for nome other than PopMatters. Enjoy! www.popmatters.com/k-pop-artms-...
K-Pop Has Its Meta-Moment with the Dynamic Art of ARTMSwww.popmatters.com The K-pop market is oversaturated, but ARTMS cut through the technicolor noise by remixing and defying lore conventions to create something drastically new.

Both turned out to be excellent. Gai Noi in Minneapolis is wonderful for lunch--plenty of nearby parking; indoor, outdoor patio (with large sun umbrellas), and atrium options for dining; and great food. And Four Tet is as interesting an interview as you'd think he'd be.
I have to work on campus tomorrow. OTOH: I’m getting fed lunch and a new episodes of Tape Notes just dropped featuring Four Tet so that’s my commute listening all settled.

In Airside, these two classically Priestian themes - alienation and transit - combine with unusual totality, and that in this sense it's therefore this final novel that proves the purer distillation of Priest's oeuvre. On Airside, for the LARB:

So I think this GRRM kerfluffle is indicative of exactly the issue with his relationship with Worldcon: he seems to want to be both treated as just George the guy who has been attending for years who holds the losers party and George the guy whose third career as a writer went supernova.

WTF. The electric company in Texas doesn't have a map of outages so people have been using the Whataburger App to figure out who lost power. This is like when Homer was using the Krusty Burger map when they got lost at sea.
