Number Line Branch xkcd.com/2956

That just means people will use numbers more and congestion will stay the same!
Avatar
What we need are more public numbers, and regular number routes for the average calculator and save the posh numbers for taking out on the weekend
Avatar
First things first is to have new numbers arrive more often than just once per hour
Avatar
We also need to make sure that less-used numbers are available for those who need them, serving poorer mathematician neighborhoods.
Avatar
Indeed! Best would be free numbers for everyone and removing the barriers for calculation. Also multi-modal numbers, so we make more efficient use of shorter and longer numbers where they make the most sense.
Avatar
listen it's time to start making hard choices. ban numbers entirely on the island of manhattan
Avatar
I propose a micro-topology solution whereby everyone has their own ε by which they traverse their own 15-number open balls. However these balls would form a cover of the whole number line so you’d still be able to go anywhere!

Title text: "Attention all passengers: This is an express sequence to infinity. If your stop is not a power of two, please disembark now." Alt text: https://explainxkcd.com/2956#Transcript

That trick never works! As soon as it was opened it was infinitely full. I'd suggest mass transit, but that's physics

I wanna photoshop the Trolley Problem guys onto this.

Avatar
A roundabout will solve this problem
Avatar
Kathy Hochul will put a stop to this

Some unicode guy i swearing profusely right now.

No! Stop! 🤣 please, for the sake of humanity 🤪 —hard !

BREAKING: SCOTUS blocks mathematicians from branching the number line without explicit approval from Congress.
Avatar
Terrible news! That branch became equally congested after only a couple years... Good news! They're going to be building a third branch!
Avatar
Because complex numbers were not complex enough.
Avatar
I misread this as “Number Line Brunch” and it is also a good idea for decreasing congestion at restaurants on weekends!
Avatar
The key problem is this line terminates at 0. We need to add negative numbers. A series of rings to directly connect numbers far from the centre would also be nice.
Avatar
We now have *two* competing numbering systems... xkcd.com/927/

Absolutely fuming that the 7th digit got the spiral instead of the triangle and the 8th got the triangle instead of the spiral.
Avatar
So delta is Ashmont, is that right? Is there a subsidiary trolly number line to Mattapan?
Avatar
you have to disembark at Mornington Crescent and take the pedestrian tunnel to change lines
Avatar
Avatar
Disappointed it didn't fork at π

Avatar
It needs to be a high-speed line, with bigger gaps between numbers, if you're going to reduce congestion. Like HS2 was meant to be!

"Attention all passengers: This is an express sequence to infinity. If your stop is not on the Fibonacci sequence, please disembark now."

Final stop: L'Hotel Grand de Hilbert.

something something *complex plane* something

dude, did you know about imaginary numbers?
Avatar
It seems relevant that it branches off at about 3.14. Some kind of pi-line? I don't know enough about math to really comment on how that would work though.
Avatar
It will end the same as with imaginary numbers, no body needs new number branches except their creators for some fancy research...

Avatar
They did it wrong! Benford’s Law shows the lower digits are the more congested ones
Avatar
Seriously this is not how hexadecimal works. Although it feels like it. These glyphs are way cooler than the "A", "B", "C", "D", "E", "F" we currently use. How do you pronounce them?
Avatar
Avatar
Seems kinda arbitrary point to start it
Avatar
Oh, no! Who failed to return an infinity stone!?
Avatar
Avatar
To avoid any confusion for future math students, we're giving these the totally normal and descriptive name of "hypothetical numbers".
