Translation (at least involving English) is a very white-dominated profession. (Mostly women, so I suppose that's something.) Which is odd because you don't need qualifications to do it professionally. Most of us fall into it. So why so white?
Yeah although for Chinese poetry the gender breakdown isn't great either. From my experience at least with many Asian languages there is a huge overlap between advanced degree in Asian studies and who becomes a literary translator.
