Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.

You may quote me."

Really excellent thread that gets at the heart of how this country has managed to create a cult of individuality around collective action
1/x Before I get to work, I was ... *discussing* with a sincere third party human (I respect them a shitload more than those who just absent themselves) where they said "If your only choices are coke and pepsi, if you don't start buying a third brand, all you'll ever have is coke and pepsi .."

(ignoring all world events right now because) so my csa sent me 3lbs. of onions yesterday morning. in response, I made a large batch of red onion jam yesterday afternoon. the whole house is now infused with the sharp aroma of onion. Not sure this was a good idea after all. the jam is delicious.

All poetry is a political act. Few political acts are poetry.

For all the terrified Democrats squealing that Biden has no chance, please just stop your sobbing. We absolutely can win.

and once again me faceplanting into "should've read up the whole damn thread, you dumbass". Apologies.

Fair enough. I guess I was thinking in terms of political experience, rather than national profile.

Was in the running for a post in Vancouver at UBC a few years ago, but didn't make it in the final round. And while the owner of a miniscule plot of land in Quebec, property ownership doesn't actually translate to residency allowance. Alas.

Umm...Barack Obama served three terms in the Illinois Senate, '97 to 2004, before getting elected as Junior Senator from Illinois. Not exactly a political babe in arms. Or are you being facetious?

Aaarrrgh UPS is driving me mad. My 1:45pm delivery that was going to arrive no later than 4:15pm is now expected by 7:00pm and I see the rest of my afternoon fading into oblivion...

Been working on it. Barring a cross-border marriage it's actually harder than you might think.

sketching out a new future dystopian novel where each remaining tribal sect of humankind huddles in their own moon cave, passing laws to ban immigration, assimilation, and miscegenation, while rapidly consuming all the remaining oxygen tanks in existence to support the cheers at political rallies.

Gonna title it "'Let 'Em All Go To Hell -- Except Cave 76'"

yet where are (((we))) to go these days? Safe spaces are rapidly diminishing.

If I may channel my grandmother for just a moment here... none of this is good for the Jews.

Well, yes. But as far as a reality check goes on the expulsion bit...I'd also like a magic flying bicycle, a cat that recites Proust, and a Supreme Court that is interested in upholding the democratic rule of law.

Thought: All things being equal, I do not want to have to live in an ethno-nationalist authoritarian nation busily disposing of the rule of law.

Bookshop .org is currently offering free shipping. If you were looking to get the hardcovers, this is MUCH BETTER than Amazon: they support independent bookstores with every sale (and you can even pick which local store to support). Get one here: bookshop.org/p/books/mask...

Lawyers, I do not want to be mean, but do laws even matter with the federal judiciary and the Supreme Court acting the way it is? Because it’s giving Dred Scott energy all day every day, ok?

After a solid 53 years of reading, here are a few less obvious writers & tales that have stuck with me: - RA Lafferty - Martin Gardner (esp. as ed. of The Annotated Alice) - Barry B. Longyear (Circus World Trilogy) - Robertson Davies (terribly dated, but still) - Roald Dahl - James Stephens 💙📚
Avatar
and more: - Robert Graves - AA Milne - Lewis Carroll - Lawrence Durrell - Rudyard Kipling (primarily The Jungle Books) - Don Marquis next list: the More Obvious.
Avatar
And now: some "more obvious" influences and highlights from my literary life, in no particular order: - Franz Kafka - JRR Tolkien - Maurice Sendak - Terry Pratchett - Ray Bradbury - Isaac Bashevis Singer - Ursula K leGuin - WB Yeats - TS Eliot - Günter Grass
Avatar
and more: - George Orwell - Anne McCaffrey - James Joyce - Salman Rushdie - Raymond Chandler - Isaac Asimov - Charles Bukowski N.B. I'm leaving out so many, especially names from specialized or niche fields, but the names here are all authors that had early and large - outsized - impact on me.

perhaps this helps to explain my rage and despair at the current state of things

currently rewatching The Prisoner, and it's remarkable that despite it being dated (it was pretty odd even when new), it seems more relevant than it has been in years. m.imdb.com/title/tt0061...
The Prisoner (TV Series 1967–1968) ⭐ 8.5 | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fim.imdb.com | TV-PG
