I can't stop thinking about how Trump would eliminate our free, public weather service, NOAA. It's an institution that goes back 53 years and protects Americans everyday with warnings for tornados, thunderstorms and more. That's the Project 2025 plan. www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

Of course, a celebration like 15 years needs lots of yummy snacks! Besides the Vanilla Olive Oil Mug Cake I shared earlier, I created this gluten-free adaptation of a favorite traditional cookie this week (family calls them "Ear Cookies"--no one remembers the real name #KidLitChat #KidLitConfections

#kidlitchat oh gosh! i think at the time I was agented with my 1st agent and my 1st novel manuscript, and since then i've written about 6-7 more novels and a bunch of picture books, had 2 kids, am on my 3rd agent and finally 1 book deal!
TOPIC: It's 2009. There's a new-ish social media platform called Twitter--funny name!--where you can "chat" with "online friends"! Cool! After fifteen years (and a move to nicer digs), #kidlitchat is STILL HERE every Tuesday. And we're glad YOU'RE here! What has the last 15 years been like for you?

People are sleeping on the last sentence. With "pornography" being defined this broadly that's like, the entire fucking internet and entertainment and (by extension) publishing industries.
Psst: Project 2025 is terrifying for a lot of reasons but also because on page 5 it calls for teachers and librarians who grant access to books that are maligned as pornography (which just means anything LGBTQ) to be registered as sex offenders. Pass it on.

Pretty impressive that Peter, Michael and Rhiannon have managed to keep this partnership under wraps for the last three months

How Amazon's negligence practically destroyed a small business. I'd call this almost unbelievable, but it jibes with my own experience of the arrogant and insensitive way that Amazon tends to shift as much of the burden of doing business onto sellers as it can get away with.
Amazon's failure to inspect a returned item before resale quickly turned one mom-and-pop shop into a $600,000 pile of debt
Dirty diaper resold on Amazon ruined a family business, report saysarstechnica.com Amazon's process for inspecting returned items is "broken," consultant says.

I'm wearing this silly hat for a reason. #kidlitchat turns 15 this month!! Fifteen!! We survived Twitter/X long enough to find a new home here where the skies are blue. Join us to celebrate and reminisce about the good ol' days, tonight (July 16, 9 pm EDT). See you there!

Thinking about how there were journalists covering the rally where Trump was shot. How we rely on them to get the facts for us. To describe the scene accurately. To interview attendees. Also thinking about how Trump hates journalists and the press and actively targeted them at his rallies.

The publishing sine wave can really hurt our hearts. When I feel this way, I read a beautiful picture book, call a friend, and then get back to it.

Was feeling in the dumps last night over the mess that is trying to be a children's writer right now but I choose to believe that reading and writing books is a worthwhile endeavor for is own sake, and I wouldn't be better off choosing a career that brings me less joy.

I think this is what Toni Morrison meant when she called racism a distraction. how many hours wasted on trying to convince racist white people that police brutality is always wrong? racism makes all of us less safe.
this is kind of bleak, but it's interesting to be in Kenya and see people discuss police brutality without ever blaming the victims. there isn't a contingent of loud white people saying Black people deserve it. and it's a relief and allows folks to be focused on the true enemy

The arc of the universe bends towards justice, but only when brave and stubborn people, often with little concrete reason to believe they will succeed, grasp it and bend it down.
I think a really misstated lines is “the arc of the universe bends towards justice.” It doesn’t bend. It has to be pushed, grudgingly and unwillingly, with thousands of hands pushing back. And I’ve come to think doomposting, even more than doomscrolling, it wholly antithetical to that.

Lost in the ongoing Trumpapalooza is the excellent news that a malaria vaccination developed at Oxford Univ. over the last 30 years and costing only £3 per shot is being unrolled in malaria-prone countries. If it fulfills its promise, this will make an enormous difference to so many lives.
