Anyone done anything cool lately? Personal victory? End of a hard journey? Please use this excuse to brag on yourself!

Me? I have been on a tough reporting trip and I still made time for a local twelve-step meeting! Also I wrote something for my newsletter I will probably post! What’s your small (or large!) success?

Ok, I'll bite. I had a heart attack on May 5 and I rode my bike 50 miles yesterday, and I'm fucking proud of myself.

That’s a fucking accomplishment, especially mentally. Way to push through it. - guy who had a stroke while riding his Peloton

Good friend of mine had a stroke riding his bike a month ago. Luckily quick medical attention and he seems likely to recover. Hopefully we'll enough to ride again. Have you gotten back in the saddle.

Been a mental journey for sure. Hope your recovery is going well.

I came out with pretty much the only defects I went in with: my entire personality.

Rock on - I was back out on my bike a month after my heart attack three years ago, and I still try to do at least 15 miles every time I go out…

What? Scary, dude. Glad you've recovered. Ride on!

Ya. It was crazy. Came out of nowhere. Super fortunate in many ways. Especially having it happen ten minutes from one of the best cardiology centers in the world (UCSD).

I have not yelled at anyone today. I haven’t even post-yelled at anyone. But, the day is young.

Congratulations on your sobriety and good job making it a priority!

Had my second interview today for a job job, which after five-and-a-half-years of working from home/remote freelance journalism work is a wild concept on its own, but only possible because I'll have eight years sober in a row come Thursday (free Slurpees for everyone to celebrate 7/11!)

We hiked a Texas State Park for the 3rd July 4th weekend in a row (becoming a thing now) & the only reason we cut it short was due to a shoe malfunction, not the excessive Texas heat.

Thank you!!! Thrilled to hear that. I hope it's useful to you!

I love the cover! Have been wanting to make a climate stripes quilt, but haven’t been able to figure out if I want to stack all 50 states and do 100 years, or just do long strips for one state/the US.
Avatar
Thank you! Your quilt sound like an important project — post a picture when it's done?

I made this glass platter, which I might enter in the county fair —subversive and homespun at the same time.
Avatar
That is really lovely! How did you make it?
Avatar
It’s made of cut-up bits of glass that are fused together in a kiln. Like stained glass, but everything has to fit tightly together.
Avatar
That is remarkable. Well done you! A beautiful thing.

Subversive, homespun…and gorgeous!

What the —- that is AMAZING!

Brag: bsky.app/profile/radl...
After a series of strokes last year, the subject of this profile, a friend, was left with bad amnesia. He called last week to tell me that someone read the piece to him during his recovery, and it helped him begin to remember his life and identity. Probably the best feedback I've ever received.

The Amorphophallus titanum I planted as a seed 13 years ago is going to flower for the first time! This is the Titan Arum, the largest flower in the world, and yes, when it opens, it will smell like death.

Wow, no kidding. That's incredible 🌱

I'm pretty freaking excited about it!

This is so freaking cool! I only read about these in public gardens, so honestly, I never even thought people could just have them.
Avatar
It’s very unusual! I lucked into a seed from a university greenhouse.

I’m so truly happy and excited for you. It’s so awesome. Enjoy the stink!!!

I like that Odoardo Beccari saw that species and felt compelled to name it “giant misshapen phallus”
